The Grand Relay

The Grand Relay is a series of stables that offer interchangeable horses for riders on a journey across the The Skyrian Steppes. The first stop on the Relay it the old city gates of Erstal in the east of Skyria close to the border with Darrenland; the last stop along the Relay is Farbluff, the most eastern settlement on the Steppes. Rather than renting any one horse, at the Relay you buy a ticket from one stop to any other and are given a fresh horse at any intermediate stop. The distances between these stops is roughly the amount of miles a horse can run without getting exhausted, so about 50 miles or 80 kilometers.    The horses offered by the Relay are all of healthy Skyrian stock, meaning they are stouter and smarter than your average horse. Relay horses are specifically trained to traverse their stretch of the route and will be able to find their way even when their rider is dozing off, which they are want to do on the dozenth stretch of the night. In fact, Relay horses will even find their way back to the nearest station without a rider, which is quite helpful since roving bandits will usually spare the mount when they go after the rider, out of respect for the horse.   Stations along the Grand Relay have become centers of commerce and community in even the remotest parts of the Steppes that otherwise known only the sparsest settlements. Besides horses they also offer bed and board to weary travelers and all the supplies you might need for a journey. Many of the more far-off stations have had small communities spring up besides them, as their remoteness necessitates a degree of self-sufficiency. Many of these stables have modest herds of livestock and even some agriculture. Nomads that roam the steppes also know how to find them and will often visit these stations to trade, meaning that they have become the single most important intersection between cultures. It is at the Relay Stations where these two worlds not only share goods, but also stories and drinks, and if you are looking for a guide to take you out into the wilds you will probably be able to find one looking for work at a Relay Station.
