Narvox, the King in Black Myth in Emaxus | World Anvil
Emaxus is currently undergoing a large entry into a new Age (and a large revision of the current Age). Consider this an active construction zone: things are moving around, getting changed, and the world's being reorganized. Apologies for the inconvenience!

Narvox, the King in Black

"I am the Lord of Lords. The King in Black. I will not kneel before pretender gods, and neither will you."

God of darkness, tyranny, pride, and willpower, Narvox is the patron of tyrant kings and malicious generals. He was the Lord of Lords, the King in Black. If Yamma is the paragon of mortals and the shield of hope for Emaxians, then Narvox is the spear that breaks the hearts of gods and the minds of mortals. Narvox wielded Willbreaker, the Black Blade, the strongest weapon that has ever or will ever be wielded. It slew gods and laid entire civilizations low. As Yamma is king of light and the Children of Yamma, Narvox is aptly named the King in Black.   He is leader of the Obsidian Lords and unifier of all that seeks to destroy, corrupt, and conquer. Narvox's will would see all of creation brought beneath his dark banners, and the entire universe unified into one perfect form. It was the King in Black who organized the Obsidian Lords, and it was he who brought the Reckoning to Emaxus's door. Narvox is the most loathed of the Obsidian Lords, and his followers are the most ambitious and voracious of them all. He wielded Willbreaker, the Black Blade, the strongest weapon that has ever or will ever be wielded. It slew gods and laid entire civilizations low.

Depictions, Symbols, and Names

Narvox is most often portrayed as a powerfully built humanoid, with black metal armor and wings of sinew. He is usually shown on the battlefield, leading charges against the Children of Yamma and locked in combat with his godly foes, Willbreaker crackling in his hands. His face is always cloaked in a dark hood, from which the only visible features are three glowing, green eyes, arranged in a triangle. This depiction is near universal, except for when other entities that are actually Narvox are being depicted.   Narvox's symbol is the Banner of Domination. It is a solid grey standard, against which the Obsidian Gateway is depicted. The Obsidian Gateway is believed to invoke the will to rally Narvox's legions. It is also held, in some circles, that the green in the Obsidian Gateway is actually one of Narvox's eyes: that the Obsidian Gateway is no portal at all, but the ever-watching eye of the god of darkness.   Narvox is known by many titles---King in Black, Lord of Lords, King of Kings, Obsidian Heir, Three-Eyed King, Døkkálfarfylkir in Aasveig, Dominus Tenebrarum in Aitreas, Yami no Kare in Taesu---but no other names than Narvox.

Ancient Home

Narvox conquered Iduran and unified the Devils Ultimate under his banner by force, and for the duration of the Reckoning, Narvox called a great fortress in the Hellish Realms his home. Where that obsidian fortress is now, no one knows. Some believe that the Devils Ultimate cast it down when they reclaimed their thrones following the Reckoning, but no one other than them knows what has truly happened to it.

Worship Distribution

Where there is light, there is the darkness of its shadow; where there are mortals, there is the darkness in their heart. Whether it is an unconscious worship, a cult working to upend a government, or a single prideful advisor who covets a crown, Narvox's will acts in the darkness under every civilization's light.   A handful of societies have fully overcome Narvox's call: small villages, egalitarian hunter-gatherers, and aescetic monasteries. But anywhere there is a power structure to be gamed, a ladder to be climbed, and control to be had, Narvox works through the hearts of mortals. And in places where pride and the lust for domination or control or change are the greatest, true followers of Narvox arise. Few are the cities without even small cults of Narvox. And who knows how many have Narvoxian devotees higher up the echelons?

Champions of Narvox

Champions of Narvox are Chosen in Black. They can enact the greatest feats of domination in existence, rewriting the very being of people to make them servile and utterly loyal. Whether they are warriors, mages, or simply cunning leaders, it doesn't matter: when a Chosen in Black rises, the power dynamics of entire planes will shift. Also, Chosen in Black are unique among the Champions of the Lords: they can unite all followers of the Five. Any Champion of the Lords rising is a threat to many. A Chosen in Black rising is a threat to all.   Only one Chosen in Black is known today.
  • Banain Blackbender, Xeshurian Emperor and Lord of Drumis. Believed to have ruled the entirety of Drumis with the banner of the Xeshurian Empire, Narvox's Empire of Obsidian on Emaxus during the Reckoning. He wielded the Sceptre of Domination, a staff believed to be able to force even the strongest wills to bend with a mere wave.

Divine Domains

Narvox is god of darkness, tyranny, pride, and willpower. He gives strength of will to those he can convert to serve his ends, and he amplifies the pride of the prideful. He seeks domination and the death of light---both that of the stars and that of mortal civilization.

COMMANDMENTS OF NARVOX

  • Conquer. Conquer all in his name.
  • Only in perfect tyranny can the world know peace. Only in brutal war can the universe be united.
  • The monuments of the false gods are built on the bones of the true King. Cast them down.

Methods of Worship

The primary method of worshipping Narvox is performing acts in his name. From gaining power to climbing the ranks---or even darker options, like branding slaves in his name---performing acts of domination and gaining more control is the greatest method of paying regards to Narvox.   Active worship of Narvox can take many forms, though the most common one is torture. Narvoxian devotees especially delight in tormenting a devout follower of the Ten into submission, or even conversion, as that is the penultimate act of control.

Archdevil of Archdevils

At the beginning of the Reckoning, Narvox conquered Iduran itself, laying the Devils Ultimate low and forcing their fealty for the entirety of the God-Wars. Some devils are still loyal to him, and work to further his goals and even ally with his mortal followers. Largely, however, his enslavement of devils earned their undying hatred. In fact, devils can pose greater threats to cults of Narvox than even paladins of the Ten, and some infernal orders are wholly sworn to hunting Narvox's followers and creations down.

Ancient Foes and Allies

Narvox's greatest enemy was Yamma himself. The gods fought countless times, and it was their battles who brought the greatest ruin to Emaxus. Legends hold that Narvox and Yamma slew each other at the same time, ending the final battle of the god-wars, and that only silence followed. Narvox's followers hope to bring that silence back, hunting Yamma's followers and seeking to undermine and overthrow mortal civilization at every turn, replacing it instead with the grand tyranny that Narvox desired.   Narvox counts every Obsidian Lord among his allies, even when they don't wish to be. He is the Lord of Lords, and can call upon them by force of will alone; however, his followers struggle more with this task. But if there are any followers of the Obsidian Lords who can unite other Lords' followers and creations under one vile banner, it is Narvox's.
