Maor Ethnicity in Emaxus | World Anvil
Emaxus is currently undergoing a large entry into a new Age (and a large revision of the current Age). Consider this an active construction zone: things are moving around, getting changed, and the world's being reorganized. Apologies for the inconvenience!

Maor

Thanks to Einar Martinsen on ArtStation for the amazing cover art!
In the taigas and tundras of Aasveig, the clans of the Maor make their existence. While others would consider their environs hellishly cold, the Maor consider them home. Within the titanic mountians, boreal forests, and fields of Aasveig, the Maor have a rich and vibrant culture that varies greatly between the different, kingdom-sized clans that unite the majority of the Maor.

Clans and Families

In their often-times harsh living conditions, the Maor must stick together to survive, and this is reflected in their culture. To a person of Maor descent, the clan is the most important social unit in existence (either the literal clan, or the metaphorical clan of companions, friends, and family). Maor people are passionate and caring for those they consider apart of their clan, but can be harsh and unforgiving to those outside of their unit. While Aasveig has the largest concentration of Maor, their penchant for sailing (and raiding) has led to small pockets of these northern peoples being spread across Emaxus.   There are also a number of Maor communities that do not swear fealty to the larger clans that divide the archipelago. These are often villages on the frontier, small societies that are isolated from the greater goings-on of Aasveig. The reasons for this isolation can vary, but these communities tend to still follow the larger trends of Maor society: valuing the family unit and working together to survive.

Naming Conventions

The naming convention for the Maor is as follows: their first name, which is their personal name determined by chosen gender, a nickname related to them or their clan, their family name with a suffix determined by their gender ("son" for male and "dottir" for female), and then their clan. Ex: a man from the Clan of the Raven could be named "Käre "Hawkeye" Kadalsson of the Raven," while a woman from the Clan of the Wolf could be named "Gudny "Stalker" Gullidottir of the Wolf." Those who are non-binary drop the suffix altogether, while those who are gender-fluid choose which suffix to use, ex: a non-binary person from the Clan of the Dragon could be named "Kadlin "Fireheart" Iarl of the Dragon."   Male Names: Firthgest, Gizur, Gudrik, Leidolf, Modolf, Olaf, Sigemær, Vandil   Female Names: Aldis, Arngunn, Arnora, Astrid, Gudrid, Matilda, Ulfeid, Thorgrima   Family Names: Iric, Kolls, Ljots, Onem, Sigeheahs, Styr, Svartkollr, Thormothrs, Varins   Clans of Aasveig: Bear, Boar, Dragon, Horse, Kraken, Raven, Stag, Snake, Wolf
