Diviner Profession in Emaxus | World Anvil
Emaxus is currently undergoing a large entry into a new Age (and a large revision of the current Age). Consider this an active construction zone: things are moving around, getting changed, and the world's being reorganized. Apologies for the inconvenience!

Diviner

Diviners are a highly sought-after and desired role in many power structures across Emaxus -- and even greater Yophas. Though they go by many names (diviner, oracle, prophet, hariolus, uranaishi, and more) in many cultures, their function is always the same: whether through arcane or divine magics, glean the wisdom of the multiverse. For lesser diviners, this is only as complicated as bridging language barriers or granting extremely limited prescience; the greatest prophets, on the other hand, peer into the infinite timescape and grant their benefactors the wisdom of the past, present, and future.   Typically, the greatest diviners are those who have spent their entire lives mastering the arcane side of divination. The gods can grant foresight and wisdom, but they also respect the flow of time and the dangers of peering through it. Mortal mages tend to be less concerned about that.

Career

Qualifications

As with their names, roles, and powers, diviner qualifications vary heavily. For a wandering tribe on Drumis, someone granted omen-dreams or the ability to read the bones may be considered the diviner. Meanwhile, the Temple-Tribunal of Yathra Silthame may keep one or more powerful clerics blessed with foresight around, consulting them for how to move forward and the like.

Career Progression

Typically, a diviner progresses much the same as any spellcaster: attempting to grow their expertise over their magic and push it to ever greater heights. Though only a handful of diviners ever reach the strength of true prescience, it is the aspiration of most.

Perception

Purpose

The simplest breakdown of a diviner's purpose is to grant their rulers greater wisdom or intelligence. How they go about doing this varies heavily based on the desires of the ruler(s) and the capabilities of the diviner themselves. A diviner of barebones talent might be employed as a universal translator by a king, translating and transcribing all official happenings. Meanwhile, that same diviner may be treated like a true prophet by a smaller, isolated town or village.

Social Status

Diviners are perceived differently depending on the culture, but all are treated as nobility by their rulers. Whether it is because they think it will influence the diviner's visions for the better or just to keep them happy, most people who keep diviners around seek to treat them well; however, certain common folk can see diviners with disdain, mistrust, or outright fear.
