Temple of Crea'el

The Tree Temple

The druids, who desired nothing more than to learn all there was to learn about, well, everything, secluded themselves in the Great Tree. Many discovered that their affinity for earth magic made them excellent builders, using their abilities to feel how best to place stones for lasting structures and bolstering them with magic. Other druids strive to fight for truth and so study the laws of the land, often being requested to administer justice for major trials throughout the land of Eirena. The Great Library itself houses at least one copy of every book in the land, as well as many from other lands.

The Great Builders

With their affinity for the earth, the builders of Crea'el are requested by all who can afford the magic-infused stones and logs of the north. The oldest stone buildings of the major cities are all infused with magic to last longer and withstand the elements.

Building spells

While stone holds stability spells very well, wood is the best for most spells, including anti-theft, fire-proofing, and prosperity spells.
Fire-proofing spells are placed on each piece of wood used for the structure.
Anti-theft spells are placed on each exit (doorframes and window frames) to trap any would-be thief.
Prosperity spells are placed on doorframes so that any who enter will be encourage (but not forced) to purchase items from the few shopkeeps who can afford the spells.

Guardians of Truth

Due to their love of knowledge and desire for truth, the druids excel in knowing the laws of the kingdom, as well as the individual laws of the cities. They are often called upon to administer justice in major cases, especially in controverisal cases, such as any involving politicians. They are unbiased and so are trusted to judge fairly.

Keepers of Knowledge

The Great Library is the largest collection of books in all of Elyria, with many books in the different languages of the land, including a few books written about the isolated people of Hanzar. The goal of many a druid is to read all of the books in the Library. The Master druids of the north speak many languages, including Elyrica, the language of the Guardians themselves, a musical language that can summon the Guardians.   While the skill of prophecy is most associated with the Seers of the East, the Voice of the Earth resides in the North. The Voice is always a young woman who is pure of body and soul. She reaches deep into the earth for visions of the past and gazes into a bowl of liquid amber to see the future. The Guardian Agni'an speaks through the Voice to offer prophecies, though these are few and far between. The destruction of the temples was seen by the Voice of the North and the Seer of the East at the same time, and so the temples were warned, allowing many to escape.

Purpose / Function

The Temple was once home of the druids of the north. They are the Keepers of Knowledge and Truth. They practice the magic of the earth, using stones and crystals. They are renowned for their unbiased judicial proceedings and the Archdruids were once called upon for controversial legal suits. They studied building techniques using magic on stone and wood to make lasting structures that have special qualities, such as fireproofing, anti-theft spells and prosperity charms (ex. shops that are especially successful often have prosperity charms worked into the door frame.)

Alterations

The tree temple was burned 14 years ago during The Cleansing. Thankfully, only the surface was damaged; the King of the Forest still stands, growing larger by the year, even flourishing after the smaller trees and brush were burned out. The tree stands lonely in the forest, no druids left to care for it, save five who have not been able to get the tree to respond and release the defenses it used to protect itself. It has been said that it is waiting for the Guardian to return.

Architecture

The Temple was grown into the largest redwood of the northern forest using magic to make it completely natural . The only piece of architecture that is not grown from the tree is the great stone doors of the Great Library and the Sanctuary, though both sets of doors are covered in vines. The druids and novates live in grown apartments that sit on the branches like knobs.

History

Not long after the Heavenly war (see The Creation of Magic ), the twenty-three users of earth magic turned to the forests of the north, guided by the Guardian of Knowedge, Agni'an. He found the druids a home in the largest tree of the forest, a giant redwood called the King of the Forest. Using his own magic, Agni'an grew the temple around the base of the tree, incorporating the temple into the growing of the tree. The Great Library and Sanctuary were hollowed out of the tree. As the tree grows, more steps are grown for access.

The article states that the temple is a ruined structure, meaning it’s destroyed. By the sounds of things it’s still in use and going well. If it is ruined (or I miss read something) how did become that?

It was set on fire and, while many escaped, most were hunted down and killed so few were able to be returned. The tree itself, like our own redwoods, actually flourished after the fire, something the Cleansers did not know. So it's not truly a ruin, but it is unused save for a few protectors that returned. I'll edit the article to add this info :)

I like this, and I'm reminded of The Great Ga'Hoole Tree from the Guardians of Ga'Hoole books. But you seem to repeat the same information a bit throughout. Why were the temples attacked?

Sorry, clicked the comment button before I was finished typing. The way the druids used magic to grow their building into and out of the tree itself is really cool. Also creative use of spellwork into the stone and wood. It makes sense to put those types of spells on those types of materials when you think about it. :)

Thank you! I've never read the Guardians of Ga'Hoole, but I was kind of inspired by the Great Deku Tree of Zelda infamy :)   The temples were attacked when the Emperor (see my article about Romauld Tor'Zuberi) decided that, because magic couldn't save his wife and son, it could not be allowed to continue. This was the Cleansing, an article I have yet to write (the thought of doing it is a bit daunting)

Wow, very interesting. Never thought about the fact that seekers of knowledge could be used as judges but now that you wrote it...that actually makes a lot of sense. Hope you don't mind if I accidentally use that idea in my own world? Also, great work on the details, a picture of a strong, big tree reaching to the skies would be just perfect here. Though I had the feeling that the building is still in active you right until the "Alterations" part which got me a little confused. If that so? If not, I'd consider altering it that way so it becomes clear you're talking about its past functions. Not so trivial when everything is written in present tense. And was that tree something special or unique, like a magic tree that druids can get energy from and use it for their rituals and to defend themselves, a place that naturally calms down and relaxes everyone near it or just a usual, except for its size, tree? Maybe, it even started to develop its feelings and sort of a mind which the druids may later even communicate with? And, most important, what happened to the books from the Library and all other stuff that was there when the tree was burned?

Thank you! :I don't mind if you use the idea at all. I do think I need to go back and put everything in past tense to make it clearer that the tree is no longer in use. The tree has become magical over time, and when the Cleansing occurred, it protected the sanctuary and library by closing the rooms in on themselves, though, sadly, several lives were lost when the tree defended itself. There were about 20 people inside the Voice's sanctum, but I haven't decided if the tree kept them safe or if they were casualties of the tree closing up. The books are safe, but cannot be reached at this time.
