Dragonborn

Born of the blood of the dragon gods Tiamat and Bahamut, these humanoids bear the resemblance of dragons, though without the wings.
Fairly common all over the Material Plane, Dragonborn are a proud, strong and sometimes stubborn race, known for their loyalty and stubbornness.

Basic Information

Anatomy

As a species of the humanoid variant, Dragonborn share characteristics with most humanoids, though they differ greatly in 3 places:
  • Their head is that of a dragon.
  • They have tails
  • They are covered in scales
  • Besides these interesting points of physique, they share physical design with most other humanoids: 2 arms, 2 legs, 1 head, 1 torso.

    Biological Traits

Given their many variations, Dragonborn can vary greatly in size, height, and weight.  The smallest of their kind is the white scaled, while the largest are the red/golden scaled.

    Growth Rate & Stages

The Dragonborn develops in growth spurs: though they are born as mere babied, they mature at a faster rate than most other humanoids, making them adult at the mere age of 14.  Though they do not live much longer than the average Human, they have fewer years where they are deemed "unfit" for most life in a harsh world.

    Ecology and Habitats

Dragonborn live their lives among the civilizations of most other humanoids, though most seem to prefer living among Humans and Dwarves, given both races preferences for the "finer" things in life (ie. drinking, fighting, and working).

    Biological Cycle

Most Dragonborn live well into their 80s, though some become much older than that.  During their later decades, the colors of their scales seem to dull quite a bit and a truly ancient Dragonborns color can be hard to discern, as most tend to go a dull grey/brown with age.

    Behaviour

Loyal to a fault, Dragonborn stick with who they know and who they can rely on, even, or especially, if that someone is dangerous to be around. They are somewhat boastful lovers of life, that would like nothing more than to kick back with a drink, after a hard days work.

    Additional Information

    Social Structure

The Dragonborn value strength, loyalty, and honor over all other traits.  Therefore, most Dragonborn are employed in some form of hard labor or as muscle for whoever they deem worthy, though outliers exist.  They are boastful by nature and loves to enrich their fellows lives, with tales of danger, overcoming difficulties, and otherwise heroic deeds, though this may vary in greatness and truth, given each individuals life.    Only one overall accepted social rule exist for the Dragonborn, no matter their given alignment or way of life:   To break an oath, is to banish yourself from society.

    Facial characteristics

Given their heritage, their heads and faces resemble that of a Dragon, though they are much more Human in expressions.  During a first, and sometimes second, encounter with the Dragonborn, a person can have a hard time reading their facial expressions, though this quickly become routine, as with most other races, sapient or otherwise.

    Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The Dragonborn have inherited their powers of the Dragons, though not their senses.  While not incompetent at any of the senses from birth, most Dragonborn are somewhat short sighted, though no living specimen will confirm this.

    Civilization and Culture

    Naming Traditions

Though some Dragonborn take a family name, much more common is the tradition of earning a name for yourself.  Upon completing a task worthy of a name, one may give themselves a name befitting the task, therefore essentially creating a boast spoken out loud as quickly as possible.  Given the Dragonborns proclivity for honor, it is rare to meet a specimen not living up to their taken name

    Major Language Groups and Dialects

Dragonborn speak, as one would think, Draconic as well as common, though this may vary given their upbringing.

    History

The Dragonborns history is convoluted and shrouded in myths, though some truths have been gathered over time. The origin of the Dragonborn dates back to a time long forgotten, where only 2 creatures of life existed in the Ethereal Plane: Bahamut and Tiamat.  While some stories say these two were actually one, and others tell a tale of 10 who became 2, one thing they all agree on: Tiamat loathed Bahamut with all her being.   Over time, this resulted in violence, as such is want to do.  Fighting throughout the cosmos, ripping and tearing into each others flesh, the Gods of the Dragons shed many a blood drop from the heavens onto the earths.    From these drops of blood came 2 races: from the largest drops the Dragons and the from the smallest the Dragonborn.  What followed was a time of unprecedented war: chromatic Dragons fought metallic Dragons and so did their smaller brothers and sister.    All across the cosmos, the war for the right to rule rolled. Until both of the Gods grew tired and longed for slumber.  Tiamat sought a plane of darkness to gather her strength once again, while Bahamut sought a place of light to enrichen the color of his scales once again.  Taking with them their children, the Dragons and Dragonborn were divided, as much in space as in color.    During the millennia since, much has happened and both races have spread their influence throughout the cosmos, far from their mother and father.    On the Material Plane, Dragonborn have long been ingrained in humanoid society, and no one living knows for sure when they appeared there.   Though still sporting the same colors as they have since their origin, the Dragonborn no longer adhere to a specific creed, solely dependent on their color. Progress they can be quite proud of, if you ask them, and absolute heresy if you ask most Dragons.
