Niswy (Knee-sway)
Niswy is the main centre of the study of magic in Elotia. Niswy is nestled in the Onomuk Mountain in Daendar and is largely a collection of academic organizations who function as a settlement, even though Niswy itself lacks the capabilities to sustain the people who live there.
Demographics
The demographics of Niswy are highly dependent on the academic projects ongoing within the settlement at any given time. Typically, Niswy is only inhabited by scholars and others studying the source of arcane power. Within this magically-inclined (but visiting) population, there is a wide spectrum of background, wealths, ethniticites, and religious backgrounds.
By comparison, the true permanent population of Niswy (which is capped at 30 for safety reasons) is made up solely of Daendish citizens with at least some Zagash ancestry and an innate lack of magical ability.
Government
Niswy, as a settlement, runs on the funds given to the settlement by those scholars who visit it, along with substantial ongoing support from the Daendish government (who claim first rights on any major discoveries from Niswy). As such, Niswy operates as a government department, operating for the benefit of the study itself and not required to sustain itself as a normal settlement would. This means that all laws, taxes, and other considerations are managed directly by the Dakuko for the betterment of Daendar as a whole.
Industry & Trade
The function of Niswy is centered on the study of magical currents and flows through the cave at the centre of the town. This study takes precedence over all else, hence making other forms of industry or trade nearly non-existent. To this end, the government of Daendar materially supports the settlement through regular provision deliviries (via Loom) to Niswy. The people of Niswy have, over time, automated offloading of such goods from the Loom and moving goods into specific central places through the implementation of magical servants of various types.
Infrastructure
The structue of Niswy itself is centered on the twisting, bore-hole like cave that extends nearly straight down into the Onomuk Mountains. Niswy's construction is such that all the buildings in the town are connected to one another, with the streets protected by an over-arching, mostly flat dome structure that spans across the town (except over the outlet of the cave). The people of Niswy have built complex scaffolding and bridges that span across and through the cave as it descends, though an equal number of such structures have been lost due to strong magical and seismic pulses through the cave.
Guilds and Factions
There are several distinct institutions that have a near-constant presence in Niswy, including the Forgotten Phronistery and the Canopies. However, the more distinct factions within Niswy are related to theoretical alignment on the source, function, power, and properties of the cave itself.
