Rex is a goofy little gnome who lives in Willow Reach. Nearly everyone in town knows him as the cheerful, almost-homeless oddball who wanders the streets helping anyone who asks.
For years, he slept on the same vacant lot until the townsfolk finally came together and built him a small cottage. They simply couldn't bear seeing someone so kind sleeping outside.
Rex speaks in a strange, fragmented way. Every few words seem perfectly normal, followed by unrelated phrases or half-finished sentences that make little sense. Despite this, he is always smiling, eager to help, and genuinely cares about the people around him.
His kindness, sincerity, and childlike wonder make him one of the most beloved people in Willow Reach.

Before becoming Rex, Illuminate was considered one of the greatest conjurers of the modern age.
His specialties included:

• Conjuring wind, earth, and light creatures.
• Creating stable portals between realms.
• Teleportation.
• Interplanar rituals.
• Dimensional barriers.
• Magical safety protocols.

His understanding of spatial magic remains nearly unmatched.
His natural magic is Telekinesis, allowing him to manipulate objects effortlessly with his mind.
Although most of these abilities are buried beneath his fractured psyche, traces of them occasionally surface when Rex instinctively repairs, improves, or creates magical devices.

Personal history

Rex was not always Rex.
Once, he was known as Illuminate McNellis, one of the most gifted conjuration wizards of his generation.
Illuminate specialized in studying the Metaverse and the countless realms connected to it. He researched dimensional travel, summoning, teleportation, and magical barriers, becoming an expert in safely connecting different planes of existence.
His knowledge eventually earned him a position at S.A.M. R&D, where he helped develop magical safety protocols, dimensional containment systems, teleportation networks, and protective enchantments designed to keep researchers safe while exploring other realms.
His greatest strength was never raw power.
It was making dangerous magic safe.

The Incident

One day, his supervisor, Dr. Cara Fantroy, assigned him a highly classified project.
The project centered around an ancient magical circle unlike anything Illuminate had ever seen. It incorporated all eight elements, yet many of its runes and symbols were completely unknown.
To Illuminate, it was the greatest puzzle of his life.
For nearly two years he studied, repaired, and refined the ritual until he believed it was finally stable.
He activated it.
Instead of opening a pathway to a newly discovered realm...
...it connected to something waiting.
A powerful demon.
The creature immediately attempted to seize Illuminate's mind and body.
Realizing what was happening, Illuminate desperately cast one of the strongest mental warding spells he knew.
The spell succeeded...
...but at a terrible cost.
Instead of defeating the demon, it shattered Illuminate's mind into fragments.

The Escape

S.A.M. R&D quickly contained the incident.
Unable to trust his condition, they transported Illuminate to a secure facility for further study.
Before they arrived...
Illuminate instinctively cast a teleportation spell.
No one knows how.
No one knows where he intended to go.
When the spell ended, he appeared outside Willow Reach.
The brilliant wizard Illuminate McNellis was gone.
Only Rex remained.

Education

Before the incident, Illuminate studied at Turlance Academy, specializing in conjuration magic.
His extraordinary talent earned him a position as an assistant to one of the academy's Aces, where he participated in numerous magical research projects before leaving to explore the wider world.

Employment

Most people in Willow Reach simply know Rex as...
"Rex."
He spends his days helping wherever he can.
He carries supplies, repairs fences, moves heavy objects, fixes broken tools, and occasionally "accidentally" upgrades magical devices while tinkering with them.
The townsfolk usually reward him with food, tea, or a few coins.
Rex never understands why.
"I'm just helping."
Before the incident, Illuminate worked as a senior researcher at S.A.M. R&D, specializing in dimensional studies, teleportation safety, and Metaverse research.
Prior to that, he served as a research assistant at Turlance Academy, contributing to numerous magical projects.

Mental Trauma

Although Rex appears cheerful and carefree, his mind is under constant assault.
Deep within his subconscious, a fragment of Illuminate continues reciting an ancient protective spell without pause.
Every few minutes—even while asleep—pieces of the incantation escape his lips.
Most people dismiss it as meaningless babbling.
In reality, that spell is the only thing preventing the demon from taking complete control.
Rex's broken speech is the result of three different thoughts constantly overlapping:

• Rex's cheerful personality.
• Fragments of Illuminate's memories and knowledge.
• The subconscious spell protecting his mind.

Occasionally, Illuminate briefly resurfaces.
When someone asks about advanced magic or complex machinery, Rex may suddenly explain an incredibly sophisticated concept with perfect clarity.
Seconds later...
...he has no memory of saying it.

He never expects anything in return for helping others and often seems happiest simply making someone smile.
Although his intelligence appears limited, moments of startling brilliance occasionally surface before disappearing just as quickly.

Apples
If someone gives Rex an apple, he'll beam with happiness and proudly hold it above his head like a trophy.
Unknown even to himself, apples were Illuminate's favorite childhood treat, given to him by his mother.
That memory survived.

Falling Leaves
Rex can spend hours playing in piles of leaves.
Sometimes he'll whisper fragments of an old phrase:
"Leaf on the wind..."
Long ago, Illuminate dreamed of exploring every realm in existence.
Watching leaves carried by the wind was what first inspired him to study conjuration magic.
Magic
Whenever someone performs magic nearby, Rex watches with childlike amazement.
Sometimes he quietly offers a sentence of advice that dramatically improves a spell's structure or efficiency.
If anyone asks him to repeat it...
He simply smiles.
"Big boom!"

Yellow Eyes
Nothing frightens Rex more than yellow eyes.
Whenever he sees someone with them, he instinctively looks away while trying to remain polite.
His own right eye turned yellow during the incident.
He avoids mirrors whenever possible.
If forced to look directly into his own reflection—or stare into another pair of yellow eyes for too long—he becomes overwhelmed by terror.
He may freeze...

or lose consciousness entirely.
