Nyxidra

The wide and mysterious oceans are home to many powerful creatures, but few can match Nyxidra's majesty and might. Nyxidra, a huge, reptilian beast endowed with magical power, lives on both the depths and the surface with unparalleled grace and strength. Its ability to call ice and water magic, paired with its massive size and enhanced senses, makes it one of the most versatile and feared predators on the waters.

Despite its intimidating appearance, Nyxidra is more than just a hunter. Some civilizations have learnt to domesticate and ride these magical beasts, utilizing their power for transportation and magic for defense. However, in the wild, they are elusive, wandering between the wide ocean and coastal seas, only coming ashore on rare occasions.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Nyxidra is a large reptilian beast with a massive, rounded body, crowned by a sturdy grey shell adorned with purple triangles and blue circles at the end of the triangles. At the top of its shell, multiples Starfire-blue spears cover the top of the shell in straight line, while jagged charcoal spikes emerge from the purple triangles.

Running along its thick neck, a multiples small Starfire spike extends from the beging of the shell to top of its head, where triangular-pointed ears frame its form. Its large mouth, set beneath two piercing eyes on either side of its head.

Nyxidra's sleek black skin is striped with vivid purple lines, making it difficult to see at night. Two enormous front fins generate incredible power and agility in the water, while two smaller rear fins help with balance and maneuverability. The ominous, hydrodynamic design is completed by a lengthy tail at the end of the body.

Biological Traits

Nyxidra is a magical beast that can summon ice and water magic from its mouth. It can use these abilities in the form of ice rays or spikes, while its water magic takes the form of a concentrated sphere. Nyxidra can also produce a dense, dark blue mist that surrounds its body, obscuring it under a large fog that stretches across the ocean.

When in peril, Nyxidra can use the surrounding water to create a swirling, protective sphere that shields it from attacks. Its thick shell protects it from larger predators and is strengthened with spikes that prevent gigantic monsters like the Kraken from grasping it. Despite its great defenses, Nyxidra still requires oxygen, therefore extended submersion poses a risk. Creatures capable of dragging it underwater represent a serious threat because it can only hold its breath for up to six hours.

Nyxidra is also an extremely fast swimmer, both above and below water, which allows it to avoid danger and hunt efficiently.

Ecology and Habitats

Nyxidra spend the majority of their life on the open ocean, smoothly gliding across the large water. They have the ability to float while sleeping, allowing them to stay on the surface. They also like deep diving, where they can stay down for up to six hours to hunt, secure their food, and enjoy the darkness of the deep sea.

Though Nyxidra are predominantly ocean dwellers, they occasionally visit coasts, particularly during mating season, which happens every two years. While uncommon, they can occasionally be sighted on land, mainly to sunbathe. The only other time they are spotted on land is when they are injured and require time for their wounds to heal.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Nyxidra are omnivores that eat a variety of fish and algae to survive. Their teeth are usually hidden, only popping out of their gum when they eat. This particular adaption keeps their mouths elegant and unencumbered, allowing them to use their magic with ease and without impediment.

Additional Information

Domestication

Several kingdoms have successfully domesticated Nyxidra, employing them as mounts and to boat pullers across the ocean. They make excellent boat pullers due to their tremendous speed and strength, and can easily tow medium size ships.

Aside from their physical capabilities, Nyxidra's magical talents make them useful. They can protect cargo and passengers against monster attacks and pirate incursions, ensuring a safer journey across dangerous waters.

In addition to their functional applications, they are magnificent beasts to ride, providing an exciting sensation and a spectacular sight to see.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Nyxidra has an extremely strong sensing system, making it a fearsome predator in the depths. Its eyesight is well-suited for low-light circumstances and infrared vision, helping it to hunt in the darkest waters and pitch dark nights. While its vision is not as good in broad daylight, it thrives in deep water where it can easily find prey.

In addition to its great vision, Nyxidra possesses a remarkable sense of touch, allowing it to notice small shifts and movements in the water surrounding it. It can also detect small temperature differences, allowing it to navigate thermal currents and detect warm-blooded organisms nearby.

Nyxidra's hearing is precisely tuned to take up low-frequency underwater sounds, allowing it to converse and identify distant organisms. This makes it acutely aware of its surroundings.

Finally, its powerful olfactory systems detects a variety of odors and substances in the water. This skill allows Nyxidra to track prey, discover food supplies, and detect potential threats, making it an extremely efficient and versatile hunter.
