Detect Magic

Alright, class. This is the most fundamental spell you need to learn, and I expect every one of you to master it. Detect Magic allows you to perceive magical energies whether bound to a person, an object, or a location and the auras they emit.   Auras are composed of multiple layers. With practice, you will learn to see and interpret the waves and hues within them. As you examine the flow of magic, you can begin to distinguish elements, schools, and the nature of the effect itself. In time, a skilled mage can infer how a spell functions, what it is meant to do, and even predict its consequences so long as their understanding is sufficient.   Learn the fundamentals. This spell is the foundation upon which true magical insight is built.

Effect

You detect magical auras. The amount of information revealed depends on how long you study a particular area or subject.   1st Round: Presence or absence of magical auras. 2nd Round: Number of different magical auras and the strength of the most potent aura present. 3rd Round: The strength and location of each aura. If the creatures or objects bearing the auras are within line of sight, you may attempt Knowledge (arcana) checks to identify the school of magic involved in each aura (one check per aura; DC 15 + spell level, or DC 15 + ½ caster level for non-spell effects). If the aura emanates from a magic item, you may attempt to identify its properties using Spellcraft.   Strong magical areas, overlapping effects, or powerful local emanations may distort or obscure weaker auras.
Aura Strength
An aura’s power depends on a spell’s effective spell level or an item’s caster level. If an aura falls into more than one category, the stronger result applies.   Functioning Spell (Spell Level)
  • Faint: 3rd or lower
  • Moderate: 4th–6th
  • Strong: 7th–9th
  • Overwhelming: 10th+ (deity-level)
Magic Item (Caster Level)
  • Faint: 5th or lower
  • Moderate: 6th–11th
  • Strong: 12th–20th
  • Overwhelming: 21st+ (artifact)

Lingering Auras
Magical auras linger after their source dissipates or is destroyed. Such lingering auras register as dim (weaker than faint).   Original Strength Lingering Duration
  • Faint 1d6 rounds
  • Moderate 1d6 minutes
  • Strong 1d6 × 10 minutes
  • Overwhelming 1d6 days
Outsiders and elementals are not inherently magical, but summoned creatures register the conjuration magic that brought them forth.   Each round, you may shift your focus to detect magic in a new area. The spell penetrates most barriers, but is blocked by 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood or dirt.

Natural Magic

If Detect Magic is one of your natural magics, its range increases to 100 feet.
