Atlas Laboratory

Atlas Laboratory was one of S.A.M. Research & Development's smaller research facilities. Its primary purpose was to study wildlife, magical creatures, and the effects of Earth's ley lines on the surrounding environment. Unlike the larger research complexes, Atlas Laboratory remained a relatively isolated outpost deep within the forest. Because of its small size, no town or supporting infrastructure ever developed around it.   Today, all that remains is a half-destroyed, abandoned three-story building hidden among the trees.

Alterations

Atlas Laboratory is a three-story structure built from Jin Stone, a durable material known for its exceptional resistance to both physical and magical damage.
First Floor
The first floor served as the administrative level and contained:
  • Changing rooms for researchers.
  • Two offices.
  • A small meeting room.
  • Storage areas for research materials, equipment, and preserved samples.
  • Second Floor

The second floor
housed the laboratory's primary research facilities, where magical testing, experimentation, and creature studies were conducted.
Third Floor
The upper floor consisted of six private rooms and personal laboratories reserved for the lead scientists overseeing the facility's projects.   Entering the laboratory today is an unsettling experience.   Nearly every room is coated in strange dried chemicals, colorful residues, and unidentified substances. Walls have been torn apart by explosions, while sections of Jin Stone have been melted or pierced by magical energy despite the material's legendary durability.   Broken desks and shattered equipment litter the halls. Pools of glowing liquids cling to the floors, while sticky crystalline growths and unstable magical residues continue to emit faint light decades after the disaster.   The entire laboratory has become a hazardous zone where even a simple touch may expose visitors to unknown magical contaminants.

History

For many years, Atlas Laboratory quietly conducted research into the surrounding forest and the nearby Earth ley line.   The scientists studied how the ley line gradually enriched the soil, allowing the forest to grow larger, healthier, and denser than normal without causing explosive or unnatural growth. They also researched the effects of various magical spells on local wildlife and experimented with Leyline Crystals, hoping to discover new methods of improving agriculture and magical cultivation.   One of the laboratory's final projects was led by Dr. Henry and Dr. Mell.   Their experiment sought to layer several different wavelengths of energy through Leyline Crystals to determine whether they could enrich soil in a manner similar to magical fertilizer.   Moments before activating the experiment, everyone in the laboratory felt an overwhelming surge of magical energy.   It did not originate from their equipment.   It came from somewhere above them—on the third floor.   The entire building fell eerily silent.   Then...   Several moments later, strange purple, green, and yellow liquids began seeping through the ceiling as though the upper floors themselves had melted. The substances dripped onto the researchers below.   Dr. Henry was among the first to be struck. The instant the liquid touched his arm, his flesh blistered and began to boil.   Dr. Mell instinctively ran.   Around her, panic erupted.   Each person exposed to the mysterious substance suffered different symptoms.   Some experienced severe chemical burns.   Others began coughing blood until they collapsed.   Several lost their eyesight within seconds.   Some watched their hair fall out in clumps before their bodies gave way.   Others suffered symptoms that none of the surviving researchers could even identify.   Within moments, the laboratory had descended into complete chaos.   Realizing there was nothing she could do to save those already exposed, Dr. Mell fled the building, becoming one of the few survivors of what would later become known as the Atlas Laboratory Incident.
