Grand Curator of the Athenaeum Rank/Title in Eldûra | World Anvil

Grand Curator of the Athenaeum

The Grand Curator of the Athenaeum is a rather mysterious figure, one not seen often outside the library’s walls. They are the overseer of Eldûra’s largest library, and all the curators under them report directly to them. Most recorded Grand Curators over the years were elves, though there were the occasional human, dwarf, or other creature recorded having reached this rank.   A Grand Curator is tasked with maintaining the stability and safety of the Athenaeum. They are the parent-like leader who takes it upon themselves to train up those who decide to join the ranks of the Athenaeum’s curators. The Grand Curator rarely leaves the library, mostly out of their own accord, though that does not keep some from reminiscing on the days they could leave on endeavors to gather books or relics. But they should not leave, as if they were captured by someone with nefarious designs, it may bring about the downfall of the Athenaeum and all the history contained within.   The lessons led by the Grand Curator can either be immensely fascinating—or excruciatingly dry. It depends on the pupil and who the Grand Curator is. But everything the Grand Curator teaches is extremely important and will aid every curator that is sent out into the world.   A Grand Curator can either be male or female, and of any of the races who populate Eldûra. All that determines whether or not someone can be the Grand Curator is: 1) how long one has been a curator of the Athenaeum, 2) how they get along with their fellow curators, 3) if they desire and/or are mentally suitable to lead, 3) if they are willing to teach, and 4) they contributions to the Athenaeum.

History

When it comes to collecting and hoarding knowledge, no one does it better than the Athenaeum, a cooperation of skilled librarians and curators nigh-on obsessed with collecting books and preserving history. Many often joke that the Athenaeum is more efficient in gathering and even more territorial about the lore they collect than any dragon with its hoard.   Members of the Athenaeum are housed and make their headquarters in the Athenaeum, a sprawling, nearly-endless library housed within the caverns left empty when the last of the war-mongering Nathaeic Dwarves died. So despised were those dwarves that none of the other dwarven kingdoms wished to claim them. And those caves sat empty for nearly 200 years.   Eventually, a Boreal Elf learned of these caves. He had been gathering knowledge for years and had dedicated his long life to preserving records of what had come before. His home was fit to spit at the seams with how many books and records he had collected and he needed to find a bigger place before his landlord got fed up with him, kicked him out of the property he rented from him, and put all his work to the flame. So, when he heard of the empty halls of the lost Nathaeic Dwarves, he knew what he had to do.   He gathered up all his books and notes and tablets, to the point that the wagon groaned ominously and four horses had to be hitched to it. His neighbours looked at him in disbelief as he set out, shaking their heads when it became clear that he wasn’t going to change his mind.   When he reached those cavern halls, he began the slow but steady transformation of the place, and through that process, he became the first Grand Curator of the Athenaeum.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

A Grand Curator may be forced to step down or be forcefully removed if they lose sight of the Athenaeum's goal, or if they begin to act in a way that may be detrimental to the world. Thus, the curators watch the Grand Curator, as much as the Grand Curator watches them in order to keep them accountable and to watch for any sign of treason. if a Grand Curator is found to be treasonous, they will be cast from the Athenaeum with all honours and accomplishments stripped from them.
