Folmirra Génna

Folmirra Génna (/fᴐːlmɜːrɑ geɪ̯nnɑ/, fol-meer-rah gain-nah), also known as The Flame Palace or The Flaming Palace, is one of the two major volcanic cones of the compound volcano, Génna Laelkaeph (/geɪ̯nnɑ leɪ̯lkeɪ̯ɸ/ gain-nah layl-kayf), the second being Húra Génna. Folmirra is the taller of the two peaks, and thus the elder—though the height difference is determined by eye at a distance.   Located at the end of the Dragonspur Penninsula, this volcanic massif is nicknamed "The Lighthouses of the Aem Mauyíam" or "The Lighthouses of the Moonspan Ocean" due to their constant eruptive activity. These constant and regular eruptions give them a burning halo that lights up the sky at night, which sailors used to keep an eye on the coast in the dark of the night.   For a period of 30 years, both Folmirra and Húra ceased to erupt. In response to this, two lighthouses were erected, one on either side of the pennisula in hopes of keeping that part of the seas safe.

Geography

Folmirra Génna is the taller of the two volcanic cones of Génna Laelkaeph and the seat of the king of the Húmentari. Its flanks are scarred with hardened lava flows and dotted with massive lava bombs that are as large as houses. Veins of black obsidian decorate the steep slopes where the lava cooled quickly and occasionally the volcanic glass catches the light of the sun and glitters.   Up to six kilometers from the foot of the massif Folmirra sits upon the land is ash-laden and barren, the ground poisoned by regular eruptions and the caustic chemicals that come with the lava. The vegetation seems to avoid the land there and even then the trees at the edge seem sickly, like they're dying yet refusing to do so.   Despite being an extremely tall peak that is often obscured by clouds during the day, the constant heat from the volcano's eruptions has kept snow from accumulating on Folmirra's summit. What snow falls upon its peak melts immediately. This often gives the slopes a wet sheen, despite the fact that the snow is often vaporized immediately, something that lends to the peak's cloud cover.

Ecosystem

Despite how barren the volcano appears, there is some life on the slopes of this extreme environment. Unbeknownst to all in Eldûra, as their science hasn't reached our level yet, there are extremophile bacteria that live in the sulfur vents and on the edges of the rock next to where the lava flows.   Folmirra is home to many of the fire Mentari and they are the most prevalent form of life there. There are other fire-based creatures to be found there: magmeels, fire wyverns, brimstone drakes, and obsidian tortoises. Each and every creature has a high affinity for the heat given off by the lava, though all but the magmeels can stray from the heat.

Localized Phenomena

Occasionally, lightning will lash at the peak of the volcano during an eruption when the ash particles rub together in the ash cloud. Folmirra erupts daily, and lights up the sky at night from the glow of its lava.

Natural Resources

  • Obsidian
  • Ash (it contains nutrients that can feed crops if mixed into the dirt. But there can always be too much of a good thing and the copious amounts of ash around the volcano have poisoned the ground)
  • Lava stone/basalt
  • The light of the lava at night
