The Rainbow Quill Item in Eldris | World Anvil

The Rainbow Quill

The Rainbow Quill is noted for it's capability of color changing ink and capability to write with every color of the rainbow. It first manifested in 1057 AH. Works written with this quill to this day are still vividly colored, as if it had just been penned hours before. Magical collectors are often willing to pay a high price for anything signed with this magical pen. Of note, the pen was used to write several romance novels that were controversial for their subject matter, such as a Elven princess and a Dwarf falling in love.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The quill is composed primarily of magical energy, a manifestation of a familiar. The ink can be any color the user desires and is capable of shifting color in mid stroke. Markings left behind by this quill are capable of being erased on a whim. The ink never fades or runs when exposed to water. Since the ink itself is woven from magical energy, the quill never runs dry.

Significance

The discovery of this manifestation was made by Archmage Felicity Rossi during her early years as a student of the Tower of Learning. The familiar bound in this form was part of a pair, it's counterpart a book. The technique to bind a familiar in this way has been passed down at the Tower since she took the mantle of Archmage at the end of the war with the Beast King. The complex binding is difficult to perform and few succeed, those who do succeed find themselves only wanting for writing material.   Post war, the technique was taught to king Eldrid Ableford and used to sign all important documents and letters. Without Archmage Rossi, his signature and seal could not be forged, securing the alliances that Eldrid and his twin sister worked to build.
