The Redorien Empire
The Redorien Empire is a large mass of land in the center of the known world. In many regards a very diverse nation, made up of loosely connected Kingdoms, duchies and city states which a large amount of autonomy.
Structure
The empire is organized as a very decentralized state. The 'Kaiser' holds his own lands within the empire while most are held by the emperor's vassals, over which he holds a limited amount of authority. It is not rare for there to be in fighting among vassal states within the empire while the Kaiser can do little to avert such conflict. In times of war the Kaiser may enact laws to make all states within the empire contribute troops.
Culture
The cultures within the empire are quite varied, while many are similar and sharing the same language. Although they are so similar in heritage and are united by the empire, some people may be offened to being called 'Redorien' instead of being reffered to by their own culture.
Overall what they all have in common are the beliefs in chivalry and their industries nature. Redorien's are famously hardy workers, especially those from the south, likely having taken some of their beliefs from the once neighbooring dwarfs.
The Northernes on the otherhand are renonwed for their martial customs, sometimes even among woman. Alongside this they are great fishermen.
Public Agenda
In recent years Albrecht II has recognized the weakness of the empire lies within its decentralized nature. It was the intent of the founder to use a voting system to vote every Kaiser, however that has often led to in fighting, everyone with some renown hoping to earn their place as ruler. Thus it is his ultimate ambition to keep his family on the throne even after he passed. That will mean changing some deep rooted laws and no doubt some intrigue and nasty business before it is all over.
History
After the fall of the great Eldorien Imperium a huge power vacuum took hold. Many petty kingdoms, duchies and counties were present as independend states in the lands formely ruled by the empire. The religion that the Eldoriens spread and their culture that has left marks on all the people it had touched, urged the people to yearn for another great empire to replace the former glory of Eldoria. Many wars were waged in the centuries following the collapse of the Imperium in between the newly formed states. They were all trying to unite their people under their banner, attempting in vain to rekindle the glory Eldoria could bring to the region.
it was under Wilhelm that the empire of Redoria was born. The name Redoria itself came from a word of the language of their forefathers, that being 'Redorin', which meant people. He did so, quite remarkably, mostly through diplomacy. That does not mean no wars were waged, quite on the contrary. It took a great war against the greatest rivaling king to prove Wilhelm's true strenght. Soon priests were begining to claim that he was chosen by Veruma to unity the region into a great empire, one that would rival the greatness of Eldoria itself.
It took most of his lifetime, but at the end all the lands in which the people of 'Redorin' lived were united, now not just by language but also by one emperor. The banner of the gryphon replaced the Eldorien eagle. Near the end of Wilhelm's life no clear heir was present as Wilhelm had no known children. It was in a great speech to his uncertain subjects, both nobles and commoners alike, that he proclaimed his new empire the empire of Redoria. This was their empire, not that of his bloodline. From then on every future 'Kaiser' was chosen by the electors, who were always the most influential nobles within the empire.
Demography and Population
The empire is made up of humans for the most part, filling their cities and villages. It is in the south, near the green mountains, that some dwarfs have intermingled with the local populace. Some have taken to living among the human cities while others have established small communities of their own, governed by the empire.
In the kingdom of Nordholm, in the far north of the empire, gryphons formerly lived at large in their mountains. Around two centuries ago they migrated into other regions of the empire after several attacks from slavers that stole eggs and killed their kind for personal gain. Most notably is the gryphon tribe living near the capital in the mountains, known commonly by the locals as 'Kaiser's own' since that tribe is where most of the gryphon legion are recruited from. Formely they were taken from the creatures by force, but the current Kaiser Albrecht II recognizes the gryphons as intelegent and thus grants them gold in exchange for service as well as the right to own property.
Military
It was the grandfather of the current Kaiser who established the gryphon legion, a force of state owned and trained gryphons that follow only the Kaiser. Since that the legion has remained in the hand of his two succesors. It was the current Kaiser, Albrecht II, who reformed the legion into a true force to be reconned with. Due to his close friendship with a gryphon he recognized the creatures as equal to men and began to grant them more rights, starting with paying them wages and the right to own property.
Since then the gryphons of the legion have won the Kaiser's undying loyalty, willing to follow him to death if needs be, serving as a bodyguard of truly imposing proportions.
