Thieves Cypher
The thieves guild of Argas has developed a cipher to be used among its members. This is to prevent being detected by law enforcement officials. It involves using specific words to give details to other members of the guild. The specific phrases are only used in public, as there’s no need to veil their language among the thieves guildhall. Among the vast number of listening ears in public, however, discretion is key.
The phrase “Golden Travels” is used to indicate that a specific piece of information will lead to a rich payout, either through loot, or the potential to steal a large amount of wealth from a specific target. This is most often heard in taverns or marketplaces, where two members may be meeting to exchange information.
“Bountiful Morning” is a greeting used by members of the thieves guild. This is most generally used as a blessing, indicating that you hope the other members will have a good haul on an upcoming job. It is typically reserved for right before a job is going to be executed, as it is considered bad luck to give a blessing to somebody if you’re going to see them again. “Fruitful tithes” is a giveaway that a job has been successful. If a member had been assigned a task by a superior, they will generally greet their superior in this way to let them know that the job went off without complication, and with great, or better than expected returns.
“Dry run” is a phrase that means the information was a bust. Typically it may come from somebody as the explanation “I’ve had a dry run lately”. It’s up to the superior who passed on the information to discern what happened. The target might have known somebody was moving against them, or the superior who divulged the information may have received faulty intelligence. Either way, it is up to them to rectify the situation. These are just the most common phrases of the cipher.
