Spark of the First Forge
The First Forge is a great black spire that exists at the center of the metropolis of Argas. It is believed to be the point from which the planet was teraformed by the gods. The Spark of the First Forge is a magical flame burning at the base of the forge that burns away disease from the sick, mutations from those afflicted by conflux storms, impurities from building materials, and rot from vegetation. Because the Spark is seen as such a beneficial artifact to all of the people Variel, Argas has been deemed a neutral territory with embassies from all major nations, which allows for people from all over the world to gain access to the Spark.
Priests from all different faiths come to Central Plaza to collect offerings and gifts from pilgrims, traveling merchants, and adventurers who come to see the Spark. These collections are then sent back to their respective churches as offerings to the gods. Because the Spark is seen as the beginning of life on Variel, it is revered by all faiths.
Tradesmen of all stripes will also come to the Spark to have their tools blessed. It is said that the first forging of magical weapons was the direct cause of a blacksmith who used the Spark to bless his tools. Many different artisan guilds have also taken their trade tools to be blessed. Brew masters will also bring their brewing ingredients to be purified by the Spark, believing that it results in a purer batch.
While many seek out the Spark for what it can do for them, others seek out the Spark for the opportunity it brings them. Many thieves and con artists have found that the Central Plaza is a prime spot for picking pockets, or taking advantage of unsuspecting travelers. These unscrupulous folks will don disguises, and steal whatever they can get away with to make a small profit. Because of this, the local embassies have created the Forge Guard, a police force consisting of service members from the military branches of the different nations. Having this force patrolling has drastically cut down crime, but not seen it go away completely. The Spark is vastly important to the people, and so it will always draw activity, both good and bad.
