Cleric

Clerics are intermediaries between the mortal world and the distant planes of the gods. As varied as the gods they serve, they strive to embody the handiwork of their deities. No ordinary clergy, clerics are imbued with divine magic through their devotion. Whether spreading the glory of their faith with inspired words or raging against the profane forces, clerics can always be found at the pivotal edges of conflict between the sacred and the profane. Clerics are as diverse as the gods they worship, each demonstrating a different aspect of divine intervention.   Adventures: Clerics embark on their adventures primarily to further the agendas and interests of their deities. Some may seek to spread their faith, convert the unbelievers, and sanctify or reclaim holy sites. Others take a more active approach, smiting the forces of evil where they find them, or seeking out relics of religious significance. For a cleric, adventuring is not only a personal test but a divine quest.   Characteristics: Clerics are known for their versatility, mastery of divine spells, and the ability to both heal and harm. Their magic can bolster allies and devastate foes. Their training involves rigorous study of scripture, divine rites, and the clerical magic that is their god’s gift. Depending on their divine domain, clerics can function as effective healers, stalwart defenders, or potent combatants. Their power derives from their faith, making them unwavering in the face of even the most daunting foes.   Alignment: Clerics’ alignments tend to reflect those of their deities. Clerics of benevolent deities are often good, while those serving darker powers may be evil. Regardless of their alignment, all clerics commit themselves to the spread of their faith and the opposition of opposing religions and moral philosophies.   Religion: Clerics are the mortal instruments of their gods. Each cleric serves a specific deity and draws magical power from that divine source. They perform religious services, spread the veneration of their god, and combat the followers and deities that oppose their own. This deep connection to their deity shapes every aspect of their lives and missions.   Background: Many clerics come from devoted backgrounds, often starting their service in the church or a similar religious institution. Others might have experienced a divine call later in life, leading them from a more mundane existence to one of religious significance. Regardless of origin, all clerics are united by their profound faith and their unswerving dedication to their deity and religious tenets.   Races: While any race can have clerics, Humans are the most common, given their propensity for zeal and ideological diversity. Dwarves and Elves often have clerics who are deeply integrated into their cultural hierarchies, serving not only as spiritual leaders but also as custodians of ancient traditions and racial heritage.   Other Classes: Clerics often work well with other classes that share similar ethical or moral outlooks. Paladins and Monks are natural allies, sharing a dedication to divine or spiritual paths. They may find common ground with good-aligned Wizards or Druids, but they often clash with classes that oppose their moral views, such as Rogues or certain types of Warlocks and Sorcerers.   Roles: Clerics can adapt to many roles within an adventuring party, depending on their domain and choice of deity. They are excellent healers and support characters, capable of sustaining their allies through the toughest battles. They can also serve as frontline combatants or divine spellcasters, using their spells to tip the balance of any fight. Their versatility makes them invaluable members of any party.
