Darkcoat Goat Species in Ekozia | World Anvil

Darkcoat Goat

Darkcoat Goats are a tranquil species of animals used for wool and meat as well as for transport and protection. The goat's wool is of a distinct color making for a relatively exotic trade good.

Herds and Matriarchs

The Darkcoat Goats are a type of goat living in the Serrenten Mountains. They can be encountered in the wild in small herds of around 10 to 20 animals. The typical goat is about half the size of the average human - measured by the height of the shoulders.   However, a Darkcoat Goat Matriarch can become ginormous - up to one and a half times the size of an average human. Each herd has at most one matriarch, protecting them. Each female has the very small potential to develop into a matriach. This can happen either to succeed the previous one or to lead a new herd away from the original, if it had gotten to big.   Matriarchs have a very high life span, even surpassing that of a human.

Domestication

Due to their tranquil behavior, as well as the protective behavior of the matriarch, human tribes of the Serrenten Mountains quickly started to domesticate the animals. They are excellent transport animals even in steep and difficult terrain, where no cart can reach. The matriarch herself often can carry a large amount of goods to the nearest town for trading.   As the matriarch's size even rivals that of a Copperpetz, they are still valuable protectors of villages in the area. Each village is in turn very appreciative of their vilagge's Darkcoat Goat Matriarch.   They were apparently already domesticated by the Lost Ukanten Civilization, as many depicitons there include the animals. Interestingly enough it seems the goats were even larger than today, according to the proportions depicted.

Produce

Darkcoat Goats give off milk that is a bit sour, oddly tinted brown, but very nourishing. The tribes of Serrenten Mountains are well-known for their many variants of Serrentinger cheese.   The wool of a Darkcoat Goat is of an anthrazit color, which is usually difficult to dye. Additionally, it has a metal shine, making it a good way to imitate woven metal when fabricating clothes out of it.

Aaaa! The matriarchs are HUGE! I bet clothes made from their wool are pretty, though. I love that the wool has a little bit of a metallic shine.
