Relo-Oyster
Originally abundant, the Relo-Oyster, named after the scholar Luzo Relo who first discovered them, is now a rare and sought after animal. Once found in the coastel region of almost every continent, only the few who were raised and bred in tanks and therefore on land as the ascent happened can now be regularily found.
While it was at first believed that this was just another species of Oyster, it was discovered that it was constantly absorbing any mana in its vacinity, forming a pearl containing concentrated magical energy.
Upon further experimentation, it was found that, if left undisturbed, the pearl could be broken which would release the pent up energy, which then could be absorbed by nearby magic users.
If however, the pearl growth was influenced, by for example hitting the clam with a fireball spell, the pearl would instead take on the properties of the spell used against it, absorbing it in the process.
This method enabled the breeders to create pearls that could be broken to use the spell stored within. While still needing some understanding of the properties of magic, this enabled anyone to use the power of spells.
Using the pearls for all kinds of utility spells was common practice. They were used to repair items, create food, build buildings and so on.
Since only a few Relo-Oyster farms still exist, this commodity has become incredibly expensive and no longer used for menial magic but for grand spells or regeneration of mana.
Buying an oyster itself was even more expensive, but now none are for sale anymore. The trade nation of Nella has gone far and wide, across the world in an effort to find every single farm and bought up their entire stock before transporting them to their mainland.
Ever since, this trade nation holds a monopoly over the clams and the pearls, should one be interested in one, this is where they would need to go.
