Steelbreaker

"It was time for the family to depart. We had done all we could in this place, too many with no ambition, and small minds hindering growth. I won't have my family strangled by mediocrity. We will go forth with ambition, to succeed or fail, but to do so grandly."
-Red Steelbreaker
The ruling family of the Kingdom of Lux. This family has ruled Lux for only a handful of centuries and is primarily responsible for its habitation. Before the Steelbreaker Family came to Lux a few small tribes and hermits inhabited it, and the family saw the opportunity on the islands that others feared to attempt and succeed.

Family Tavern

Steelbreaker was the name given to dwarven bastards in Relalon. Gerleen Renkohir was the owner and proprietor of a tavern in Relalon, The Parched Raven. She inherited the tavern from her father after he died in a mining accident while rescuing other miners. The Parched Raven became a Dwarf bar from that point forward, always filled with dwarven miners. This kept Gerleen and the tavern busy and prosperous. After a night with a smooth-talking dwarven bard and sometime later Gerleen became the mother of Red Steelbreaker. The miners continued their patronage and filled the role of father and mentor to Red as he grew up. One night when Gerleen was cleaning up a young dwarven girl stumbled into the tavern, feverish and delusional. She shoved a baby into Gerleen's arms and was gone. The child was named Belrim. Gerleen chose to raise the boy herself. In the following three years, Gerleen became the mother to three additional abandoned children, Tydar, Harren, and Sanso. The other mothers in town called her, Gerleen and her five steelbreakers. The dwarven mothers of Relalon continued to support and assist her as much as they could and the miners were their fathers as they came to and from their shifts.

A Leader

Red was the oldest and most driven of the bunch, a natural leader. At an early age, he watched the mines and what the miners did, he knew that the job he watched today would likely be his and his brothers for the rest of their lives. Red wanted more, he wanted more for his brothers. So he went to work, ran the tavern with his younger brothers, and began taking the tavern food to the mine to make more money. He built a food cart out of old mine carts and parts he found discarded around town. Not long after he built another cart, and another expanding the reach of the Raven until he was down on Relanon Square challenging the other businesses and offering more than simple dwarven miner fare to cater to the elves and humans in Relanon. For a time he had success and the Raven boomed, but soon the kindness of the other businesses to some dwarven bastard ran out. Red had to learn to fight after a few hired gangs raided or damaged his business. Red was smarter and more driven, when he got hit, he and his brothers hit back twice as hard. They secured their place in the squares and the markets with blood in the alleys.

Opportunities

Red improved his ties with the miners and began to branch his trade into more than food. Seizing opportunities to provide goods and other services to the foremen of the mines eventually forced out other competition. His ambition and following continued to grow and he seized control of the troubled Twin Springs Mining. After a time he was able to make the company profitable again. Soon after he began to run into barriers, rebuilding a mining company made him successful and introduced him to the town's elite and old families but change things or grow beyond his place and he found himself blocked. After a few years of struggling against the status quo, he realized he was a Steekbreaker. There was no place for a bastard in power in Relalon. When that realization struck him he nearly burnt the town down around him but in deference to his mother and the good people who supported him he did not. He bided his time, gathered wealth and contacts with his eyes set on a new challenge, Lux. An untamed land of new adventure a new challenge. Those who had tried before had failed and it would take all his wealth, skill and contacts, it would take a bastard to conquer that land. He would be that man.

Lux

Red gathered his new family, his brothers, and their families, and those miners who would go with him and sailed the Stokemar to land in what would Kalandrin. Overtaking an abandoned colony attempt from times past the Steelbreakers began their work. Taming land and dining new mines. It was hard going and for many years it was all they could do to survive. The challenge of getting supplies, unknown dangers in the wilds shutting down whole claims and ventures, maintaining control and keeping the men on task. The family had a meager existence on Lux that always seemed one disaster from ruin but the kept going. The sheer will and determination of Red drove them forward, where a Steelbreaker was the only one who could rule. What eventually brought them security was the discovery of Luxian Crystals, Fozatir Steelbreaker Red's youngest son was bright and had a mind for magic, he unlocked the secrets of the Crystals. Crystals that gave a little magic to those that couldn't otherwise acquire it.

Recognition

This discovery slowly propelled Lux and the Family back into success. Late in Red's life he managed to convince the Ironwood Conclave to recognize him and his claim on Lux. this made it the Kingdom of Lux and him the Bastion of Lux. A title and declaration he made sure was posted in the halls of Relalon, the Raven, and the mines in his hometown. To tell any and all that they are more than their last name.

Today

Red passed a few years after his hard-sought victory and left the kingdom and family to his son, Fozatir Steelbreaker. The family remains in control of Lux and continues to grow in strength.
