There Be Dragons

Far in the north, in the distant, unexplored places of the world, there dwell creatures unimaginable. Greatest and chiefest among these beasts in the dragon.   These enormous winged reptiles once terrorized the northern continents and helped to drive the dwarven civilization underground. But mighty heroes and monster hunters drove them back, out of civilized lands, in ages past so that our people might live without fear of these bloodthirsty monsters. Today, those that remain hide in the high reaches of Vrudias' mountains, where no sane person would ever tread. But should you travel far enough north overland you might see them still, though none who ventured into those lands have ever returned to tell of it.

Historical Basis

Dragons did, in fact, exist in the distant past, though perhaps not quite as large as the myths and legends make them out to be. They did not exist in large numbers, as their centuries-long lifespans and fierce territoriality precluded swift reproduction. And perhaps for the better, for they surely could have driven lands to barenness and species to extinction through their hunting.   Instead, it was that very same territoriality that eventually drove the massive creatures to extinction, with the aid of Garamoran trophy hunters. Fully grown dragons were know to attack anything and everything that entered into their territory, including their own kind.   The last known living dragon was slain by a Garamoran knight some two hundred years before the Great Rift brought that civilization to ruin.

Spread

Legends of dragons are common knowledge in all parts of Egera and Vrudias, though they are given more weight the farther north you travel. The legends do not exist natively to Feihon, though they have certainly traveled there by now. However, there is some similarity to some obscure tales of giant beasts seen flying in the air by Ascian Elves on long voyages in the past. This suggests that some dragons may have ventured that far south.

Variations & Mutation

Most dwarves firmly believe the dragons still exist on the surface, but their depiction of them is somewhat smaller than southern depictions. In dwarven myths dragons range in size from roughly twenty feet in length to fifty feet fully grown. In contrast, some myths popular in human lands tell of dragons the size of entire towns or even mountains.
