Kingdom of Garamor

The Old Kingdom

Garamor once ruled the north. Its cities, stretched along coastal cliffs and carved into mountainsides, were a sight to behold, a grandeur that could not be matched in the known world. From it's capital of Anira an unbroken line of kings and queens ruled for over a thousand years, shepherding their kingdom into a renaissance.

Disbandment

To this day no one understands what caused the calamity that lead to Garamor's fall. The Great Rift, as it is now called, saw the region wreaked with earthquakes and unruly seas for years, with seemingly no end in sight. Many of Garamor's people fled westward as their cities became dangerously unstable, but still more remained. The final days of the calamity claimed thousands of lives as a great earthquake and tsunami pummeled the coastal cities, reducing them to ruins.   The great kingdom of Garamor was no more. Its people, those that managed to escape, struck out westward as refugees into a wide and unknown land, bringing with them only what they could carry.   Much of Garamor's knowledge and technology was lost. It's libraries rubble and it's scholars dead or fleeing for their lives. Eventually humanity would recover from this disaster, but the splendor of Garamor would never be seen again.

Demography and Population

The population of Garamor was almost entirely human. For in the glory days of Garamor, they had no reason to wander from their native homes.   Due to their close relations with the dwarves of Vrudias there was a minority of them in parts of the kingdom, particularly in the mountain cities and the capitol. However, dwarves were not considered citizens of Garamor even if they had lived their whole lives within the kingdom's borders. That was a privilege granted only to humans.

Territories

Garamor's great cities were built along the coast, just south of the mountains or built onto their slopes. Closer to the dwarves, in order to facilitate trade, but above ground only, so as not to infringe on their neighbor's lands below the earth. Their ruins trace the borders of these cities, but it is likely that Garamor's true borders extended much further inland and southward to accommodate farmland and other necessities.

Technological Level

Today, Garamor is remembered for its understanding of magic, and the forging of magical artifacts. This is the lost knowledge that has been most sorely missed since the kingdom's collapse. It is said that the works of Garamoran magic rivaled those of the elves, although the two peoples had not yet made contact.

Foreign Relations

Garamor had extremely close ties to the dwarven nations in Vrudias and the Egeran mountains. In fact, much of what is known of Garamor today comes from the records and memories of dwarves that survived the Great Rift that sundered both nations and led to Garamor's eventual destruction. But while dwarves lived sometimes their whole lives within Garamor's borders, there was significant segregation between the races. Dwarves could live and work anywhere in Garamor, but could never be considered citizens, which meant they had no legal right to own land, and were deported to dwarven lands should they be found guilty of any crime.   Although Garamor was aware of the kentier in the western parts of Egera, it seems as though the two people's had no relations or meetings save from the occasional explorers.
