The Salamander

"You shall see them marching forward into a field of fire."
"You shall know them by their crimson cape, a banner of hope."
"You shall surrender your fears when the spectral bracelet shimmers in the light"
"You shall hear their call, a voice that commands the land as much as it does yourself."
"You shall know when the Salamander is among you, and you shall know victory from their presence."

A mystic hero among the denizens of parallel planes, the Salamander is a mortal blessed with unique power over the veil between the Planes themselves. While it's not a well-known role, it is an important one nonetheless, to the extent that fate does not allow the power to fade, as the powers of the Salamander reincarnate along with their soul.   Starting as a fickle blessing out of curiosity, it's grown into a powerful and relied-upon defender of the realms, where the representatives of the Planes themselves will bless, honor, and validate the strength behind them. It is no meager task, then, and it often cannot be done alone. Yes, while there may only ever be one Salamander at a time, as power is stored in their soul, the path of their heroics often leads them to amass trusted companions, ones who can become just as legendary in the Salamander's tale as the hero themselves.

Requirements

All Salamanders have shared one qualification: They were born at the time when two planes of reality are metaphysically right next to each other, most often the Material Plane and Fey Court as they already exist very close to one another. This connection allows the magic of the Salamander into their soul, or awakens the power that was already incarnated.

Appointment

When the Salamander is found in a current generation, they are given the information they need by their fated guide and companion. Following the assumption of their duties, they and their companion will begin a journey through the different Planes of reality, where they will meet the magical manifestations of the various plane's energies, the Living Nexuses, and receive quests to accomplish to gain their blessings and be fully recognized as the Salamander

Duties

The Salamander's main duty is to protect the citizens of any plane when one crosses over to another. Should the Fey Court spill into the Oceanic Plane, or the Volcanic Spires begin to break and erupt into the Material Plane, the Salamander will know and be given the tools to stop it.

Responsibilities

Aside from the cosmic obligation, the Salamander is often also informed of when local disturbances happen on a planer level. Even when it isn't the intersection of planes, anomalies, and disturbances can still happen with planar magic and the leylines that spread between all things. Therefore, even when it isn't a full emergency, the Salamander is still brought in as their expertise and powers are of great use.

Benefits

While the Salamander isn't a salaried position, through the benefits of adventure and questing, they often stumble upon more than enough favors, treasures, and magical items to make it worth their while. Similarly, being the defender of the Planes, chosen and honored by the Living Nexuses, also gives them social weight as well, which can aid them in various circumstances, especially since not every planar problem can be physically fought.   The Salamander also possesses inherent abilities that allow them to see and interact with extraplanar beings, as well as the subtle paths and wrinkles between them.

Accoutrements & Equipment

While each Salamander approaches their duties differently, two pieces of equipment remain the same throughout each incarnation. First is the Cameo of Honor, an indestructible bracelet that shows the face of each Living Nexus that blesses the Salamander, as proof of their accomplishment. Second is The Travellers Cloak, a crimson dragon-scale cape. Not only is it capable of blocking powerful attacks, but it also protects the Salamander from adverse effects while traveling through the planes, and can even store items in a pocket dimension for easy access.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

A Salamander is only removed from their ingrained role in one of two circumstances. Either their permanent death or if they commit such a grave act against the Planes themselves that the Living Nexuses strip their blessings and fate in totality.

History

Little is known of the Salamanders. While those of other planes know the name and the weight it holds, very few have actually seen a Salamander in their lifetime, and it's almost unheard of on the Material Plane.   What is known is that thousands of years ago, a red Dragonkin was born at just the right time, when the Fey Court was the closest to the Material Plane. Randomly, one of the newborn's first actions was to reach their hand out towards seemingly nothing, actually seeing the passage of Queen Titania herself, who was merely making a midnight stroll. Delighted by the birth of new life, and curious about their quick sight past the veil, Titania gave the child a blessing, that his sight would not deter through the years, and that he would always be safe from the Fey.   Thinking nothing more of it, Titania moved forward once more on her stroll, but her blessings would not fade. When the Dragonkin was barely an adult, his hometown was beset by an invading army and burned to the ground. In desperation, he ran into the dark forests nearby, deciding to risk the beast over the blade. But, to his surprise, as the trees got tighter and the sky grew darker, he was not trapped or assaulted by a creature of nature but instead ended up running into a beautiful, lush clearing in the forest, with a kingdom in the distance he had never seen.   Thus began the story of the First Salamander, who would go on to journey not just through the Fey Court, but through many other planes as well, gathering tales of intrigue, heroism, and mystic power along the way. Unfortunately, it would only be two decades, the blink of an eye for the Fey around him, before the first Salamander lost his life defending them from a violent, unexpected storm of Sluagh.   Titania, who had personally heralded the young man, grieved the strongest for him, but time eventually moved on.    That is until she felt a familiar spark the next time the Fey Court was close to Material.    Magic, especially originating from the Fey, often evolves in surprising ways without the caster's intent. Perhaps it was because she blessed the child so soon after his birth when very little had formed or had time to grow, but her blessings permeated past his life and had engraved themselves on the soul of the Salamander.   Thus did the cycle of the Salamander begin. While not every person who has carried on the soul has awakened to its power, there is always a Salamander in the world, ready to defend the planes of reality when they need it most, carrying the blessing, hopes, and faith of every Plane along with them.

Cultural Significance

While the Salamander is rarely heard of on the Material Plane, and just a legend among many of the others, in the Fey Court it is a title revered and celebrated, with stories of the various holders of the name being told at parties, to young sprouts, and recited in mighty plays. Similarly, anyone who works with the Fae or deals with planar magic will also know of the title, even if they don't know the full meaning of it all.
