Calanais
The Kingdom of Calanais is the largest kingdom on the Laurentian continent. They are bordered to the north by the Greenwood and have made a few incursions upon Elven lands. The elves did not take this lightly and have not forgotten. They are bordered to the east by the Kingdoms of Rheged, Dalraddia and Skara Brae, whom Calanais is at relative peace with. The Highlands border Calanais to the south with the Kingdom of Lerwick beyond that.
Calanais once tried to conquer Lerwick, but they couldn't get through the Highlands due to the monsters that dwell there and the Lerwick army that knew the terrain. To the west, The Snake borders Calanais and Calanais has fought several wars with Hebrides over control of the river. Calanais lost every one.
Structure
- King: Hereditary ruler over Calanais
- Grand Marshall: Head of the King's Council, and top judicial figure
- King's Council: Legislative group that creates laws and policies throughout the kingdom. Typically comprised of the Grand Marshall, and other lords in charge of certain functions throughout the kingdom
- Lords: Noblemen who are granted lands to rule over in the name of the king
- Vassal Lords: Dukes, Barons, and Counts who are given lands to rule over by the regional lords
Public Agenda
The ultimate goal of Calanais has always been expansion. After the Elenarr Civil War, Calanais has wanted nothing more than to reunify all of the Wendlas people under their banner. Even though they are the largest kingdom on the continent, their military exploits haven't been that fruitful throughout the years, leaving the people and nobility quite disgruntled.
Demography and Population
Demographically, most Calaians tend to live throughout the interior of the kingdom. This is due in large part to the fact that Calanais' largest cities lay within the heart of the kingdom. These large cities can be found along major roads and trading routes, bringing in many people looking for better economic opportunities. This has led to a lot more urbanization throughout the kingdom's heartland.
Throughout the kingdom's outer regions, it tends to be more rural. This is mainly because there is less development and economic opportunity because of where these outer regions are. They lie upon Calanais' border with other kingdoms where there has been turmoil and conflict in the past -- such as the north eastern territories which have suffered from the occasional orcish raiding party. Some of these outlying cities are exceptions due to them being located along certain rivers which has brought a lot of trade to the area -- examples of these would be Clonabridge, Eastlin, Howe, and Cooteshel.
Territories
Calanais owns all lands west of the Blue Mountains to the Timberlands and the Snake -- which forms their western border with the Kingdom of Hebrides. They also own all lands south of the Greenwood, all the way down to the Highlands.

Military
Being the largest kingdom on the continent of Laurentia, Calanais has a huge source of man power that is only rivaled by the kingdoms of Hebrides and Skara Brae, but even they can't field armies as large as Calanais. Calanais has been known to heavily recruit and put their soldiers through the most basic of training, and gaining rank tends to depend on your deeds in battle as well as the people you know.
- Infantry: 120,000
- Cavalry: 40,000
- Archers: 28,000
- Artillery: 10,000
- Warships: 200
- Naval Troops/Marines: 3,000
Religion
The people of Calanais adhere to the Laurentian Pantheon. All gods are observed and worshiped, but there are several deities that Calaians worship above all others and consider them to be the patron gods of Calanais. These gods are; The Daghda, Belenus, Brigantia, Lugh, Nuada, and Morrigan. The Daghda is the head of the Laurentian Pantheon and he is widely worshiped throughout the continent. Being the god of weather and crops, he is heavily worshiped by farmers. Farmers favor Brigantia too since she is the goddess of both livestock and crops; she also tends to be more worshipped in the border regions near the rivers. Merchants and middle class citizens favor Lugh, for he is the god of arts, travel, and commerce. Like the Daghda, Belenus is heavily revered being the god of sunlight -- especially among farmers. With Calanais' increasing expansionist policies since its conception, the war gods of Nuada and Morrigan have become quite prominent within their society.

Agriculture & Industry
Calanais is more of an industrial power than anything else. Even though the kingdom has a rich farming culture in its outlying regions, agriculture only makes up a fraction of its economy. Calanais draws heavily from its many guilds and markets. These guilds are made up of certain shops and organizations that all make the same products. Calanais also has many mines throughout the Blue Mountains and Highlands in the south -- even though the Highland mines are dangerous work due to the creatures that dwell there.
Trade & Transport
Goods and products are taken outside of the river trading cities and transported across a system of roads that had been established during the days of Elenarr. Most trade is done through these roads since Calanais' access to water is quite limited.
Education
The more prominent members of society tend to be the ones who are wealthy enough to get an education. The nobility hire private tutors to teach their children, while wealthy merchants, guild members, and those of the upper middle class have enough money to attend a university. Those who aren't wealthy enough try to find a trade and study under a master in an attempt to improve their economic standing. While people living in the more rural areas usually have no education.
