Dworen Amberbrook

Dworen Amberbrook (a.k.a. The Booksmith)

Early Years

Dworen or - as the people of The Lower Market call him - "The Booksmith" was born the middle child of seven to the Amberbrook family, a large and influential clan in the Brookhill region. He grew up with his two eldest brothers, an older sister, two more younger sisters and the youngest of the family, his favourite sibling and brother Dolan. Due to the sheer amount of siblings and cousins he had, as a child, Dworen could easily fly under the watchful eyes of the women who watched the community's children. As long as he diligently finished his chores the young dwarf was able to vanish among the chaos the other children created and get away to pursue his interests. With their vast farmlands in the area, the Amberbrook clan was relatively rich among the Brookhill Dwarves and thus at some point could afford books and maps that got the young Dworen into stories and dreaming of adventures. Further, as leaders of the community they often entertained guests who were travelling through the area, who the young dwarf promptly besieged to tell him all about their travels. Even as he grew up to be a diligent and capaple worker on the family's farm, Dworen never quite lost this hunger for knowledge.

Apprenticeship

Growing up in Brookhill, Dworen always knew that his professional and personal future would most likely lie in Dol Cadarn. The agreement between Brookhill and Dol Cadarn included the exchange of ressources between both settlements. In the case of Brookhill that meant supplying the dwarven capital with grains and other produce from their bountyful lands, as well as sending them a large share of their workforce in the form of young dwarves. Dol Cadarn was in dire need of the dwarves that came from Brookhill as the stronghold was suffering from underpopulation for generations, while the settlements outside the mountains were thriving. The Brookhill Dwarves would first be taken on as apprentices in the forges and mines, yet later most of them would stay and build a life for themselves in Dol Cadarn. In exchange for these valuable ressources Dol Cadarn would supply Brookhill with minerals, metals and helped turn their settlements into admirable villages and towns that further thrived and in an endless cycle that would supply more goods for them as well. It was always clear that Dworen would be among the apprentices to be relocated to Dol Cadarn as soon as he reached a certain age. The exchanges usually took place every fifteen to twenty years. When Dworen was 63 years old he would have been old enough, however it was a hard year on the farm and a flu had just taken the lives of several family members. Thus, it was decided he would stay until the next exchange, which took place eighteen years later. And so shortly after his 81st birthday a feast was held to send off fourteen young dwarves of his extended family along with about thirty more from other Brookhill clans.
There were a lot of careers one could pursue in Dol Cadarn. There were miners, blacksmiths, jewellers and many more choices, none of them relating to the young dwarf's interests. His family had implored Dworen to choose the blacksmith path, which would have given him a chance to return to Brookhill when the current clan smith would be too old to continue his work. The morning after the feast and Dworen's depart for Dol Cadarn came too quickly. They marched for two days, some of his cousins very excited and others wary like himself. Two more days later in the outskirts of the Brookhill territories all of the future apprentices from all the clans had assembled to continue into the mountains together. When Dworen saw how many there were without him, he took the decision to not continue on this path. During the night he vanished from the camp with little rations for himself as to not be branded a thief.
