Introduction:
Plane gliding is the process of entering the infinitely small space (known as subspace) between the planes of the
The Universe, the
Far Realm, and
The Drift and using the energy of the three planes to propel an object at speeds millions of times faster than light. It was used extensively during the High Precursor Era to transport people and small objects across the entire universe. For the most part, it is no longer used after the Second Cataclysm.
Entering Subspace:
In order to enter subspace, a small planar rift must be ripped open. This task is energy intensive, with more massive objects requiring much more energy. Once the rift is open, the object is immediately pulled into subspace. If a location is selected through the use of a navigation device, subspace will appear as a tunnel and the object will rapidly fly though it to its destination. If no location is selected, subspace will appear as infinite branching pathways with the appearance of the three planes. Random patches of light appear and disappear constantly in the area. These patches of light are exits, and will empty into random points in the universe. Entering subspace without navigation is incredibly dangerous.
Modern Usage:
While plane gliding is no longer used to propel objects, it is commonly used to transport radio waves between settlements and ships. The lack of mass of these waves means that forcing them to plane glide takes very little energy. Because all ships and settlements can exchange data with plane gliding, near-instantaneous communication across vast distances is possible.
