Inquisitor Profession in Ebilar | World Anvil

Inquisitor

Inquisitors serve as the military arm of the Brotherhood of Seven, and are the primary force involved in direct operations against substantial Unhallowed threats across the Continent. Inquisitors are stationed at specific locations across the Continent, which serve as their primary base of operations. Often working with local militias, armies, or with the Hunters Guild, they are responsible for tracking down information on demonic threats, the use of dark magic (especially blood and Void magic), and provide reconnaissance on known Void entities or Void-related occurrences.   Inquisitors are assigned their partners or parties and operate in individual cells of two to four individuals. These cells may be highly specialized, and called upon to take care of specific threats, or may serve more general roles, as watchmen and guardians for a region. While each cell may exercise their role from a specific home base, they are often called upon to journey from their headquarters to neighboring duchies, kingdoms, or cities, based on their knowledge, expertise or specialization, or due to ongoing investigations that they have taken on. The inquisitors serve at the will of the Council, and are overseen by appointed Council representatives. Often, they are given explicit instructions on their tasks which often do not provide a complete picture of the reasons, implications, or scope of problems to be managed. Instead, they are often given more generic instructions, or instructions specific to remove of a single concern or event.   However, a smaller subset of inquisitors, known as the Eldritch Inquisitors, are trained as elite operatives and report directly to the Council of Seven. These smaller elite inquisitors typically operate in pairs, many of who have trained together for years before serving in this role. Eldritch Inquisitors have no specific base of operations and are typically required to travel across the Continent, operating as independent entities, or under much more detailed and wholistic instructions from the Brotherhood of Seven. Rarely are these trusted soldiers kept in the dark in their assignments, and are the only cells trusted to carry out the most sensitive, clandestine, or dangerous tasks the Council requires. It is common for Eldritch Inquisors to be trained specifically in the art of hunting and killing magic users, particularly those who wield Void magic or blood magic. This has given them a reputation among common magic users as villainous entities.   While many inquisitors maintain families or close social bonds in communities they are stationed in (though many of their families and peers do not know of their true work), Eldritch cells are often too disconnected from social bonds, settlements, and others, to form and maintain romances, family lives, or close friendships. It is more common for members of a pairing to embrace each other as a romantic partner, than it is for them to form romantic bonds outside the pair. This is due in part to the proximity they spend around each other, the isolation felt on the roads, and the bonding often shared over the horrific and traumatic memories of experiences they have while completing their work.

Career

Qualifications

Inquisitors are typically selected from more remote communities, where poverty, hardship, and most importantly experiences with abyssal of demonic creatures has been more common. These individuals are selected based on a series of aptitude-based challenges, including combat ability, magical prowess, or tactical skill. Often, individuals selected for these positions, have no idea they have been watched by other inquisitors until a cell reveals itself to the candidate.   Eldritch inquisitors are of a different breed entirely. To become an eldritch inquisitor, on must demonstrate excellence in their areas of specialization (e.g. arcane prowess, combat, scholarship, etc.) and must also pass extremely dangerous and exceptionally challenging trials known as the Sundering. These trials include dangerous combat, meticulous scholarship-related tests, and the final Hallowing Rites and field test. One in twenty candidates pass the Sundering, and nearly half of candidates who attempt the Sundering die in the process.

Payment & Reimbursement

Stationed inquisitors are given a monthly salary, paid out by representatives of the council. For eldritch cells, they are paid out by representatives of the Council at irregular intervals. However, their seals, typically worn in prominence on their armor or clothing, grant them large extensions of credit throughout the Continent. Notes of script can be given to merchants, which can be redeemed by any significantly large financial institution, government body, or guild.

Nice! Inquisitors are something I'm hoping to tool around with, so it's cool seeing someone's take on the idea.   ----------------------------------------------------------------   Feel free to check out my entries: Summer Camp 2023 Entry List
