Hallowing War Military Conflict in Ebilar | World Anvil

Hallowing War

"In the darkness, I see the great shimmering eye of the Void. The smell of putrescence overpowers me and the deafening wails of the damned echo in my mind. I cannot flee, lest my honor and my soul forsake me. Yet I also cannot hope for victory. It all seems so hopeless...so futile. The great wave of rage and violence is spreading. It consumes all, overpowers all, and hungers for more. I fear we have met our end. Unstoppable is the blight. The armies of the Unhallowed sweep across our kingdoms as if unopposed. Where are the Hallowed to protect us; to save us from our fate? We have been forsakened by the Creator. We are alone. The abyss is all that is left and in one voice, decries they are Legion, master of all."   ~ King Daloman, of the fallen kingdom of Haltire. 12 Frostmelt 1236 CE
The great Hallowing War is the progenitor of the modern age and the singular event from which Ebilar's current history is measured. Everything pre-war is considered prelude to the current world, and much of it has been lost or forgotten. In the year of the Creator 1228, in the late summer, the mad warlock Vilhan Dakronias completed the construction of Daer Cathos in the former kingdom of Calte, which would later become known colloquially as the Void Lands. From his castle, Dakronias broke the barrier between the earthly plane and the Void, an unholy purgatory separating the the Five Hells from the plane of the living. Working in conjunction with Nyxus, the Dark Sovereign, ruler of the Five Hells, and commander of the Unhallowed legions, Darkonias tore a great chasm in the face of the Continent. From this great scar, poured all manner of filth. Demons, monstrosities, abominations, and commanding devils poured from the wound.

Fall of Kael Nathal, 14 Harvest 1228

Amassing quickly, the abyssal legions marched north through the coastal pass of Nathalas, home to Kael Nathal, the border stronghold of the Asha'Haid elves. Without warning and unprepared, the Asha'Haid at Kael Nathal were decimated after only two days of siege tactics. During the battle, it is rumored that the Unhallowed feasted on the flesh of fallen infantry who died in the first waves of the attack, using this as a tactic to strike fear into the hearts of the elves. Line after line of demonic forces stormed the gates of Kael Nathalas, using myriad siege weaponry and beasts of wholly nightmarish origins to break through the main walls of the stronghold. Once inside, the battle was over in a matter of hours, ending in the slaughter of the Asha'Haid forces there.
Within a week of taking Kael Nathal, the Unhallowed forces began their march past the Nathalas pass, and into the northern reach of the Maelstrom Coast.
