House Thuranni

House Thuranni is an Elf Dragonmarked House house that has split off of House Phiarlan and become their direct rivals competing in entertainment and espionage. House Thuranni is the youngest of the dragonmarked houses, having split from House Phiarlan during The Last War. To the public, agents of House Thuranni are artists, entertainers and beautiful courtiers, however, like Phiarlan, Thuranni also offers more clandestine services as well. House Thuranni's specialty is in assassinations.

Dragonmark

House Thuranni possesses the Mark of Shadow. This dragonmark grants various magical benefits that relate to divination and illusions.

History

Originally, the Thuranni line was one of the five most prominent families in House Phiarlan. As part of House Phiarlan, they operated as entertainers and spies, and on multiple occasions their actions ensured smooth transfer of power from one ruler of Galifar to the next. It is speculated that if Queen Mishann ir'Wynarn had called on Phiarlan assistance, the Last War would have been avoided.

During the early years of the Last War, House Thuranni's members were still a part of House Phiarlan and carried out many assassination contracts. The Thuranni family were mainly based in north-eastern Khorvaire and much of its work was performed in Karrnath. It worked closely with the Emerald Claw during these years, when it was still part of the Karrnathi military.

At some point before the Shadow Schism, Nyria Thuranni d'Phiarlan led a group of dragonmarked heirs from the lines of Thuranni, Shol, and Elorrenthi on a mission trying to find a feyspire, and they eventually succeeded, accessing Taer Syraen in Karrnath, shortly before it drifted back to Thelanis; they were captured by the local winter fey, and spent decades in prison. They earned their freedom within the feyspire by agreeing to serve its ruler, and the shadowmarked heirs earned the respect of the local fey by getting involved in their fights against the fomorians and their intrigues with other powers of the Faerie Court. Since then, the faeryvar ("children of summer", as the eladrin call them), have thrived in their new home and even forming families there, dropping the Phiarlan house name to favor one of the branches of the Winter Citadel. Some of them even became part of the Dagger of Shadows, an order of dragonmarked assassins that, if rumors are to be believed, are used by Shan Syraen himself to eliminate rivals. Since generations passed in Thelanis, when the feyspire returned to Eberron the descendants of Nyria and her people were completely disconnected from their former houses and families, and viceversa, and there was uncertainty about how to reestablish contact between both parties.

The Shadow Schism

In 972 YK, an Emerald Claw agent revealed a plot by the Paelion line of House Phiarlan to carry out an assassination attempt on the ruler of Karrnath to House Thuranni. House Thuranni investigated and uncovered evidence that suggested an elaborate conspiracy by the Paelion line to take over Galifar through strategic assassinations of royalty, Phiarlan agents, and the leadership of the dragonmarked houses. At this, Thuranni family leader Elar d'Thuranni personally killed Paelion leader Tolar Paelion d'Phiarlan and ordered his family to carry out the extermination of the Paelion family. Few members of the Paelion family survived the attempted extermination and those who did went into hiding.

The leader of the House Phiarlan, Baron Elvinor Elorrenthi d'Phiarlan, was outraged by this unilateral strike and called for the entire Thuranni family to be excoriated from the house. However Elar d'Thuranni refused the judgement and declared his family as a new house in defiance of House Phiarlan. The debate as to whether Thuranni would become a new house raged for years, however The Twelve eventually decided to favor Thuranni.

Given the secretive nature of both House Phiarlan and House Thuranni and their line of work, some have raised concerns about the truth to this story, and many wild rumors circulate as to the motivations of the split or question its cause. However, Elar Thuranni maintains that his actions were to quash an elaborate Paelion conspiracy.

After the schism, Thuranni established the displacer beast as its emblem, and its Regalport enclave as its headquarters at the invitation of High Prince Horget Black. Thuranni took over operations on the eastern side of the continent of Khorvaire, while Phiarlan continues to offer its services west of the Mournland.

Business

House Thuranni competes with House Phiarlan in the entertainment, information brokering, assassination and espionage businesses. While Phiarlan is superior at espionage, Thuranni's assassins are unrivaled. House Thuranni is also superior in the art of costuming, sculpture and painting, thanks to its control of the True Shapers. In addition, House Thuranni agents tend to be less idealistic and more profit focused.
