Mona Character in East Marches | World Anvil

Mona

Imperial Consul of the Iron Consulate, Captain King of the Sovereign Nation-State of Vallskarta, High Empress of Skarruuia

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Mona’s general physique is built for dexterity. She has muscle mass where it counts in the arms and thighs, but she isn’t overly toned. She’s a little flat-footed, but makes up for it by using her thin prehensile tail to counter balance.   Her general gait is standing tall and proud, offering an air of nobility. In combat situations, she crouches over, aiming to get low to the ground, darting between cover and attempting to hide. In both situations, her horns tower over her, providing the extra height to make her intimidating stature match her personality.

Body Features

Mona is a Tiefling, red as they come. Her long horns poke slightly outward and straight up from the top of the skull, with shortish black hair that curls at the ends. Her bangs meet the gaze of a cold expression, one fitting of a paranoid leader.   Mona also sports a thin tail, which gradually turns from red to black as it approaches the end, which is punctuated by a short barbed imp-ish point.   After a few scrapes in the practice field, her assault from an Owlbear, and a large bite from a Hydra, she sports a number of scars on her abdomen.

Facial Features

She has a gaunt face, one that shows her age is around late 30s to early 40s. Her cheekbones are prominent, highlighting her sharp features. Her eyes are sunken, and she has faint bags under her eyes, showing a history of late nights. Her upper lip is starting to crack.. As she starts to show the natural signs of her age.

Physical quirks

Her hands are strangely coarse for how thin they are, and in addition, are marked with the occasional burn scar, which is unusual for any given noble.

Apparel & Accessories

Mona is often found wearing an official uniform, a deep scarlet red double-breasted coat, and pitch black jodhpurs.   When relaxing, or otherwise not engaging in work mattters, she can be found wearing a set of Fine Clothes of her own design and make - a simple loose fitting shirt and slacks, with flat-soled boots.   Depending on the weather, Mona can also be seen wearing a large, thick white fur coat.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Mona’s history is…long. And kept very secret, for a mixture of reasons - largely being national security and of Infernally Binding Contracts laid against her.   The following details are only known to Mona herself.
Early Life
The Tiefling girl’s real life started out as a no-name bilge rat, a stow-away on a pirate ship. She has no knowledge of when she was born or how old she is. She learns to be a swashbuckler, jumping into the fray with her home-learned stance with rapier - a bloodthirsty and effective fighter for such a little girl.   She quickly rises in the ranks amongst the dullards who live on ships, and begins to guide the pirate ship towards success. She quietly decides a virtue name for herself.
Mid Life
Having taken over control as Captain of the S.S. Hotarr, the Tiefling led a long and historical life of plundering and gold acquisition. From parlaying with hostile pirates, to escaping Naval armies and capture, she learnt the ways of diplomacy and duplicity in conversation. She hires only the best men for her ship, and becomes intimately entwined with a number of powerful magic users to bolster her forces.   She doesn’t correct people when they assume her name is just “Captain”.
Late Life and First Death
Over her career, she amasses quite the fortune, and has been known to be a Stern but Fair force amongst the oceans. She is by right, Captain of her own ship, and of many others - becoming a King amongst Pirates. She accepts the name Captain King with open arms.   At night, she peers into the stars, and wonders about the purple star that seems to dance around in the night sky.   She falls in combat with a particularly nasty group of raiders, and is soon taken to a shrine of Helm, the patron deity of her powerful ally, a Tiefling Paladin. With great persuasion on the part of the Paladin, Helm allowed her to be resurrected. When she awoke, she finds herself in a younger body. Immediately, she gains a new appreciation for life, and understanding for what is possible in this world.   She takes a leave from the pirates life, leaving in the capable hands of her successor, and makes for land with the lions share of pirate gold, and two of her favourite Tiefling allies; the Paladin, and a Wizard.

MONA’S FIRST ATTEMPT AT FIEFDOM

Adventuring Early Life
‘Captain King’ makes a splash soon after hitting shore and getting her land legs back. She slays foul beasts, and explores ancient ruins, reaping the rewards. She finds herself brokering very one-sided deals with various guilds and businesses - she establishes an even large quantity of wealth and prosperity for herself and her two allies.   Considering the racial tension between most folk and Tieflings, she decides upon settling empty lands and proclaims it to be a home for Tieflings. In time, many folk, both Tiefling and otherwise, come to consider this Kingdom home.
Strife in the Empire
While the castle grows and builds itself, Mona delves into dungeons and discovers lost relics. She grows her wealth and power of her close allies, which draws the attention of unsavoury parties.   Through the construction, maintenance and life of the Empire, Captain King finds herself in a number of scrapes, conundrums and generally bad situations. From kidnap and torture to armies of that seek to disrupt and destroy - Captain King and her people fight them back.
Second Death
Captain King’s hope of a safe land for all came to a violent end, when after a series of unrelated tragedies, a charismatic War Lord convinced several different bandit groups to band together to seize control of the city when it was weakened. Captain King is killed in the ensuing chaos.   The Wizard grabs Captain King’s body and the Paladin, teleporting the group far away to an undisclosed location. There, the Paladin can resurrect her, who is none too pleased. She begins to plot her revenge.

REVENGE, AND LESSONS LEARNED

Destabilising and Higher Levels of Power
The Kingdom has been usurped, and Captain King learns another lesson of humility and paranoia. Unluckily for those who claim her seat of power - she knows it’s weaknesses and vulnerable points more than anyone. She begins her campaign of vengeance and de-centralised power.   She lets the name of Captain King fall into mere living memory, soon to be forgotten.   Targeting supply lines, crops and waterways, she finds it easy to weaken the city, causing its inhabitants to leave and the bandits to fight amongst themselves. Finding a band of local mercenaries to hire with the coin on her person, she assaults the town - and plunders every single home and business for anything worth keeping, and burns the Castle to the ground.   She then sets about interrogating the remaining bandits, as the Paladin interrogates corpses with divine magic, and writes a list of those to be exterminated. The mercenaries who helped her take back the riches are rewarded handsomely, both in coin and in promise. The Empire moves, and so shall its people. They are allowed citizenship in the new Tiefling Empire, and many accept.   Regretfully, Mona’s favourite allies, the Paladin and the Wizard are called upon to act as key players in other conflicts; the Paladin is the epitome of Defence and is used as such - and the Wizard is engaged in training the new generation of casters within the Empire, as well as researching new forms of magic.   The Wizard learns about extra-planar worlds, that can be travelled to. Mona gets an idea.

TEA PARTIES WITH DEVILS

The rest of her story, Mona keeps close to her chest. Where Infernally Binding Contracts are concerned, Mona is literally bound to not speak of said contracts - or even describe that she’s lived multiple lives back to back. She’s taken to drinking from a cup of tea to mean “Yes” and tapping her cup on a table to mean “No”.   It doesn’t count as a conversation if she’s just drinking tea, right?

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

To expand the Tiefling Empire by claiming a sizable portion of land in Iridell in its name.

Mona has also been forcibly entered into a contract with the Archdevil Asmodeus, Lord of the Nine Hells, in exchange for her life. However, she wishes to be free of this arrangement and is seeking a way out.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

While she is extremely charismatic and perceptive, she is not very stealthy despite her many attempts to be otherwise.

Personality Quirks

She giggles like a goblin when she finds something funny.

Social

Mannerisms

She has a tendency to gesture with her prehensile tail and it may betray her feelings on occasion, usually wagging about when excited or happy.

Speech

Mona usually keeps a very formal manner of speaking, befitting of a noble, but with an Infernal accent. She has a tendency to curse and swear in her native tongue when angered or surprised and will slip into the language without noticing when inebriated. She has recently begun to temporarily speak in a pirate-like manner on odd occasions, the cause of which has yet to be determined.
