Lin Stiobhard Character in East Marches | World Anvil

Lin Stiobhard

Master Artificer Lin Stiobhard

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Lin is old enough, at 467, to no longer look "youthful", but as an Elf, she doesn't look old. She keeps lean and fit, and her hands show the callouses of a tailor and a woodworker.

Facial Features

She has shoulder-length dark auburn hair, and indigo eyes that seem to shine with their own light (a typical trait of Ilvanorian Elves).

Identifying Characteristics

The oddly luminous eyes and copper-toned skin identify her as a native of Ilvanoris. There's a small birthmark on her right back-shoulder. There's a very subtle tattoo on her right forearm that she received as part of her certification as an Artificer.

Physical quirks

She often stands with the sort of proper posture that tells you someone has spent a lot of time amongst nobility. Those who pay attention will likely notice that she is frequently examining things, pondering how they're put together. When at work, her hands move with the deftness and confidence of someone who has plied their trade for centuries.

Special abilities

Lin's magical talents are mostly in her craftwork. She works the Weave in a more literal sense than most, imbuing bits of her own magical attunement into her creations. Most of them she has limited use of, the same way normal spellcasters do. But she can weave a couple of threads of magic into things semi-permanently. And, of course, she is familiar with the craft of making permanent magic items.

Apparel & Accessories

She is always carrying a bag of tools, and is always wearing finely tailored clothing, often with intricate embroidery. She's just as likely to be wearing a vest and trousers as she is a gown. When in town, she dresses fancy and is usually wearing something Infused as a Glammerweave, with changing colors or shifting patterns. On adventures, she wears simpler clothes with understated browns and greens, underneath her armor.   In town, she tends to wear a variety of different necklaces and earrings, among more elaborate elven style jewelry. Even on adventures, she always wears an array of rings with different styles and different jewels, and a complex wooden bracelet of some sort on her right wrist.

Specialized Equipment

Much of Lin's clothing and jewelry is actually magical equipment. Glyph-embroidered scarves and things offer magical buffs, protections, shields, walls, and invocations. Magic imbued into her rings, and the various gems inset into those rings, offer powers of magical vision, and the ability to refract one's form into different shapes. A needle with a bit of magical thread can be used to literally sew one's wounds shut in a flash.   With the push of a secret lever and a flick of the wrist, that wooden bracelet she's always wearing flips into its true configuration, her Arcane Firearm. This helical wand possesses multiple tips for projecting elemental bolts and scorching rays, and has a small hammer that strikes a blunt surface for projecting concussive force waves.   And then, of course, there's the Dragon. Like a little marionette, it scuttles about on a wooden skeleton, with skin and scales made of cloth, this little puppet can spew Force and Fire, and heal allies.

Personal history

Lin was born and raised in the Elven city of Ilvanoris. An ancient and magical place that spans between the Material Plane and the Feywild. She comes from a long line of craftspeople, both in terms of her family history and her memories of past lives. She was sewing, weaving, tinkering, and woodworking from early childhood, and is very well versed in her crafts. In the early centuries of her life, she created clothing, armor, weapons, and jewelry for royalty, both Material and Fey. In the more recent centuries, she has learned the arts of magic item crafting, though a complex web of contracts and treaties prevents her from creating permanent magic items for just anyone.   Local treaties with Ilvanoris have had her frequently traveling to various Human and Dwarven lands to learn new techniques and to produce great works for the royalty there. When she was still quite young, barely 100, she fell in love with a human, Harold Brynne, on one of these trips. Later in life, after her human husband died of old age, she remarried to an Elf, Laurence Brodeur. From these two relationships, she has two Half Elf sons, one dead of old age and the other dead from El Ren, three Part-elf grandchildren, a full-Elf son, 220 years old, and a full-Elf daughter, 170 years old. All of them have, to some extent, followed in the family's footsteps as skilled artisans.   Though all elves of Ilvanoris get a bit of military training, Lin mostly experienced war from the workshop rather than the battlefield. Ilvanoris has known its share of war in her lifetime, mostly from Orcs, and the great Gnoll Siege of 202. No one was quite prepared for the time of El Ren, though. Due to partially existing in the Feywild, Ilvanoris weathered the apocalypse better than many places, but still saw quite a few of its citizens converted to or killed by Spawn, including her second husband, her mother, and her second Half-Elf son.   Now, in the time of rebuilding, the royalty of Ilvanoris wants to send people off to Idriell to learn more of what secrets it holds, with a keen eye on the many powerful magical artifacts that have come from the place. In the wake of personal tragedy, Lin personally requested that she be sent, eager for the opportunity to be free from her normal responsibilities and to explore a new land.

Education

Lin has studied under and with master craftsmen of many trades. Many Elves in her family worked as tailors, jewelers, and woodworkers. As part of a sort of cultural exchange program, she's spent may decades traveling and working closely with Humans, Dwarves, and Gnomes in blacksmithing, tailoring, and tinkering.   Within the last hundred years or so, she has been inducted into The Art - the making of magic items. This involved studying with Elven and with Fey craftsmen.

Employment

Practicing her trades for centuries, Lin is never wanting for work. She's fashioned fine clothes, tapestries, and jewelry for royalty, both in this world and in the Fey. Her skills as an Artificer are highly sought after, but also highly controlled by various contracts and treaties. She is not allowed to make magic for just anyone.

Failures & Embarrassments

Everyone has things they're embarrassed about. Things they wish they'd done better. But, if we keep moving forward and growing, most failures of the past tend to fade over time. Perhaps this seems trite to you, as a human, coming from someone four times as old as you will ever live to be, but things tend to fade even on your timescales." Despite what she says, Lin is quietly, privately embarrassed whenever she fails to anticipate the needs of someone in her close family.   Lin has had her shares of fights and her moments of arrogance in the past. More than anything, she is haunted by things left unsaid to loved ones who died unexpectedly.

Mental Trauma

A sensitive nature and some harsh childhood discipline leave Lin subconsciously over-concerned with offending certain kinds of people.   There is a particular pain in living long enough to watch your eldest child die of old age.   In more recent turns, Lin watched her husband and second child transform into Spawns of El-Ren , and was a part of the forces who took them down. It's been a few years, and she maintains a calm and friendly demeanor, but these events haunt her. Coming to Idriell is, in part, an attempt to get away for a while.

Intellectual Characteristics

Lin is as concerned with art as she is with engineering. Her craft is, first and foremost, making people look good.   Beyond that, she is a student of the arcane. She likes building things. She loves to understand how things work. She enjoys little unexpected functional pieces hidden in fashion - liker her complex bracelet that is actually an empowered magic wand that turns into a bracelet. She is always intrigued by a new contraption, or a new enchantment.

Morality & Philosophy

Though Lin tries to be a good Elf and follow the ways of Corellan, she's kind of a moral relativist. This is a world where what is Right and Good is defined by the gods, but who are the gods to define such things? Are their own rules for themselves and their followers not as arbitrary as the rules mortals make for each other?   She has worked for the Ilvanorian military and seen many horrible things in her lifetime. She is more than ready to use violence against raving flesh hungry beasts, and undead monstrosities. She believes, to a certain extent, that everyone just does what they must to protect what's dear to them.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Right now, a big part of her motivation is to get away from home to better deal with the death of her second husband, son, and mother after the Calamity.   Her main drives, in general, are making cool things, learning how to make cooler things, and looking out for her family. Right now, the second thing means going to the place where all the crazy magic items are coming from.

Virtues & Personality perks

Lin is a master craftsman, and a decent tactician. She believes strongly in doing what you must to protect your people, and never shies away from putting a lot of work into something.

Vices & Personality flaws

Her semi-nihilistic moral relativism is generally looked down on in Ilvanoris, and in a world where gods' influence is felt so directly, but not many know about this.

Personality Quirks

She often has a bit of a showy flourish when casting spells.

Hygiene

Lin is fairly fastidious about keeping herself clean and presentable. You have to be when you work for royalty.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Lots of important people outside of Idriell!

Family Ties

Lin's father and numerous aunts and uncles are still alive. She has two dead children and two living children, and four grandchildren, with a fifth on the way. One of her grandchildren has been apprenticing under her.

Religious Views

She does her best to follow Corellon and the Seldarine, but at the same time views many of the gods' laws as just as arbitrary as the laws of mortals.

Social Aptitude

Lin is very confident. She is used to dealing with the formal etiquette of mortal royalty as well as with the capricious nature of the fey. Her confidence in her craft may come across as ego at times, but she has an attentive and caring demeanor that tends to mollify people.

Hobbies & Pets

What is a hobby when you have a dozen professions. Sometimes she makes things for the fun of it and enjoys baking.

Wealth & Financial state

Lin works for royalty, both Earthly and Otherworldly. She has spent much of her life being Taken Care of. That is to say, she has never been left wanting for food and shelter, but she has not been free to do as she wishes, either. She enjoyed more freedom in her youth. Since learning Artificing, there is a lot more red tape she has to deal with to do anything. She's been struggling recently to take back more independence, and to make sure that her children and grandchildren are not as tied down in the same way.
