Jeth (/Jeth/)

"He Whose Currents Bring Life"

Summary

Jeth is the father of all currents and shares an intimate connection with the weather, especially when it comes to small, rural communities, which he is viewed as watching over in his reign. He drives the winds from the Windy Country and the rains from the Rainy, and he dabbles in healing through their rejuvenative powers. A rejected suitor of Fae'len, he consorts with Fraeyr and Narra, and their relationship causes the component gears of nature to turn.

The Canon and the Way

Among the Prime Canon, Jeth is associated more closely with farming communities and agriculture, whereas in the Green Way he is viewed as a broader deity of rain and storm. There are exceptions to this discrepancy; sailors, for example, appeal to Jeth for calm seas and smooth sailing. In both doctrines, he is viewed as a docile and good-natured deity whose powers are sometimes driven out of control, as might a witch's. This brings close associations between hedge-witches and Jeth, and they often call him their patron.

Symbology

Jeth has many various symbols. Typically, small farmers have shrines to him in their houses, which they decorate with the crops they grow, as well as a wreath of pine or boxwood. All manner of flowers can also be used to celebrate Jeth, though they must be flowers which change throughout the seasons, and, according to tradition, they must be regularly watered even in times of drought. A wilted rose is sometimes treated as a symbol of Jeth which has been taken from Vyr; instead of praying for the latter to stop wilting the rose, they pray to Jeth for him to heal it.

Rites and Worship

Jeth’s Clerics often wear pendants with a vial of rainwater attached; typically this water is gathered from the run-off of leaves, as this is viewed as more ‘pure.’ They tend to favor clothing of blue color, but no standard outfit otherwise exists. As in the case of the hedge-witches, Jeth does not always require studious disciples to make up the ranks of his Clerics.   Most villages have a Cleric which serves to appeal to Jeth and ensure a bountiful harvest. Such Clerics often also serve as herbalists and apothecaries, supporting the locals and their animals in their health and fertility. They often maintain minor shrines in Jeth's honor when they are at home, and they may travel between nearby villages to provide their services and convene with other followers of the faith.   Aside from minor shrines in villages or farmhouses, Jeth often has large chapels within cities. These chapels provide food to the needy and arrange rations when the city falls into need. Often, farmers send one of their children to work at such chapels, and their workers retain close ties to the land.
