Kalana
The Scavenged Island
Kalana is the largest raft in the ocean of Earhion, nearly nine miles in diameter. It is constructed from the bones of ships that were unfit to go back to sea, and a massive chain anchors the raft to the bottom of the ocean. It is infamous for being almost entirely lawless, with few crimes being punished - with the exception of arson, which earns public execution. It is home to pirates, cultists, and the lost, and many who enter never return.
Demographics
Racially and gender diverse; ~40% pirates or criminals, ~30% kraken cultists, ~25% slaves, ~5% travelers
Government
A council of five seats whose places are always in contest
Defences
Its unique position as a floating island does help, however, there are constant patrols of ships around its waters. There are watchtowers with a beacon system as well, and many cannons and massive crossbows around the island's perimeter. Many of its main roads have wooden gates or metal portcullises, as well.
Industry & Trade
Piracy, theft, and other entirely illegal trades.
Infrastructure
There are few true roads or bridges, instead most of the walking areas are either inside or haphazardly built platforms. There is a singular windmill, high upon the "wooden mountain" near the center of the island, and there are, as one might imagine, many shipyards.
Assets
The combined assets of a few dozen incredibly successful pirate lords and cult leaders, and all of their respective followers.
Guilds and Factions
Many conflicting pirate crews or guilds, as well as a few factions of the kraken cult and a rumored assassin's guild.
History
Centuries ago, in 433 AM, a group of five pirate ships, whose crews had made a pact, tied themselves together to create a floating haven for themselves. Over time, the raft grew and grew, eventually being attached to the bottom of the ocean via chain and cementing its position physically and politically.
Architecture
It is haphazardly built, mainly from wood or canvas, with many still-identifiable parts of ships. Barnacles can be seen dozens of feet above the waterline as a result of this, and it seems like a days-old slum rather than a decades-old haven.
Geography
It is in the middle of the ocean, with no land in sight. The ocean floor is about 6,000 feet below, and is a gently sloping ridge that ends just a few feet from where the hundred-ton steel anchor sits, dropping off into darkness.
Natural Resources
Kalana has absolutely no natural resources.
