The Mountain Revolt

Some would call the Mountain Revolt a civil war, some would deem it a revolution, others might call it a victory but, for most people in the Highlands, it means fucking peace. The Revolt set a precedent when it comes to political intervention in Northern Menestia. Most Consuls have learned from the mistakes of the past and leave the snow-folk relatively alone.
But this independence and respect was not obtained easily. Its price could be counted in liters of blood.
Above all, the Mountain Revolt was a show of tactical ingenuity and solidarity within the Highland communities. No one can point to a single leader that kickstarted the whole thing, but one thing is sure: when those warriors hit, it was with the coordination of a single entity, and the determination of an army a hundred times their size.

The Conflict

Prelude

In small northern communities, the influence of law is often seen as the Senate meddling in business that does not concern them. This kind of meddling, in the form of increased military presence, taxation, and new restrictive laws, is what eventually lead to the Mountain Revolt. As Grand Counsul Axius Hortensis attempted to tighten his grip on the Menestian Highlands, tensions grew steadily between the authorities and local citizens. Disregarding his generals' warnings, Hortensis increased pressure on what he considered to be troublesome groups. Thus, when tensions reached a breaking point and the Grand Counsul chose to ignore them, the citizens of the Highlands took the matter into their own hands.

Deployment

At midnight precisely, all guardposts throughout the Highlands were attacked by citizen militias. Some used stealthy tactics to get as far as possible before an alarm was raised, others a distraction to draw away and separate the guards, but most simply barged in and destroyed everything in their wake.

Historical Significance

Legacy

Many monuments have been erected in the North in honor and remembrance of the people who fought in the Revolt. To this day, many are those who know or knew someone who took arms against their nation's own militia to protect their communities from what was seen as the tyrannical reign of Consuls.
Furthermore, though the revolt has been long finished, tensions and hostility still remain. The North is still independent, especially culturally, from the rest of Menestia, and their national sentiment more often lies with their local communities than with a country they disapprove of.
