Duranin

The Duranin form an array of nomadic tribes within Jadia , systemically cycling through the different settlements and desertic encampments. The Duranin are known for their overwhelmingly coded politeness, healing abilities, and harsh but communal lifestyle.   Historically, Jadian Tribes were marginal and their nomadic lifestyle tended to make them into more of a band of roving mercenaries than an organized society. However, after the Battle of Red Waters and the fall of Ethana, Jadian tribes appeared to many as a good alternative to their previous society. As such, the tribes, and their cultures, have grown exponentially in the past 200 years, and they now constitute the majority of Jadia's population.

Major language groups and dialects

Common is the universal language, but every tribe has its local sign language, which is reserved to their members, and never used in front of stangers, as using a language another interlocutor does not speak is seen as rude.

Shared customary codes and values

The Duranin people hold respect and politeness as essential cultural values. They have specific social codes that are all explicitly passed down to children, and sometimes to strangers who spend lengthy periods in their communities. Due to the harsh conditions of the desert steppes, altruism is also held in high esteem; as such, it is seen as dishonourable to refuse someone hospitality, even if they come from an enemy tribe. Harming in any way the guest of a tribe is punishable by exile or death.

Average technological level

Their main technology advancements are in the medical field. They have extensive knowledge when it comes to herbalism and the properties of plants.

Common Dress code

Duranin people usually wear sand-colored flowy clothes made out of sheer or thin fabrics and colored weaved belts, through which are integrated symbolic trinkets, that can be unfolded and used as shawls for the cold desert nights. They also carry ornamental knives, which are usually symbols of unions.

Art & Architecture

Permanent buildings are very rare, since the tribes are nomadic. They live and sleep in tents of fabric, easy to transport and light-weight.

Foods & Cuisine

Due to their nomadic lifestyle, Duranin cooking tends to depend on their journey. They do herd beasts of burden, but eating them means losing cargo transport, which makes consumption of meat rare on the road. Between cities, Duranin tribes usually feed on dairy (milk, cheese and yogurt), olives or eggplant in oil, dried figs and dates, cactus pears, cassava roots, ground nuts, and millet. In cities, tomatoes, poultry, fresh fruits (notably pomegranate and oranges), and coffee are added to their diet.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Muscles and curves are seen as very desirable, as it takes a specific body type to survive in the desert.

Courtship Ideals

Marriages
Union proposals are marked by the gifting of ritual knives. Marriages are considered sacred unions of loyalty and it is not uncommon for a single person to have multiple unions, regardless of their gender, or their partner's. It is very rare to marry someone from your own tribe, as they are the equivalent of family units. Because of their sacred status, marriages for economic or political reasons are quite rare.

Relationship Ideals

Polygamy is common and socially acceptable. However, marriages are seen as deeply sacred bonds. Loyalty and honesty are important ideals in such relationship.
