Solland

Solland is the largest of the Skjoldr Kingdoms. It is known for its devout worship of Absyun. In recent generations, it has become increasingly connected to the wider world through trade. It is the most open Skjoldr kingdom and acts as a key trading port in the North.   Solland has a strong historic relationship with Dun Hjalgrim. Officially, Solland is a de jure tributary of Dun Hjalgrim, although it is independent in practice. This historic relationship could be complicated by the new ties with the Atathians.   Solland is home to multiple Skjoldr tribes, including the major Eagle, Fox, Ox, and Raven tribes.

History

Solland was unified from several smaller Skjoldr tribes and petty kingdoms that existed in the area previously. The first King of Solland was crowned in 6153. The King is chosen through election by the tribal princes from among their number. In practice, this means that strong, popular candidates are favored, often who have demonstrated victory on the field of battle.   The current King of Solland is King Hrafn. King Hrafn won great acclaim as an Auxilia general during the Demon War of 6495. After the war, he became a celebrity in the Atathian Empire, earning the Phoenix Medal and marrying Saturnina, an Atathian woman from a wealthy family. After his return to Solland, his close relationships with the Empire were key to his coronation and reign. He has strengthened trade and diplomacy between the two nations, resulting in an economic boom, especially in the port city of Hamnstad Solland. However, many of the conservative tribal leaders are suspicious of his ties to the Atathians and the increasing influence of the foreigners in Solland.
