Al-Badir

Al-Badir was known as the Pirate Sultanate for many decades, but has become a colony of the Trading Coalition, following the death of Malik Osman.

Culture

Al-Badir was famous for its' fighting pits. Some pirates and captives are forced to fight as a punishment, but some enter the pits willingly. Celebrations in Al-Badir have traditionally included an arena fight.

History

For many years, Al-Badir was ruled by a Pirate Sultan. The Sultan allowed pirates to operate from his port in exchange for a portion of their wealth. The Pirate Sultan was not a hereditary title, but instead, a title fought for between the pirate captains.   The final Pirate Sultan, Malik Osman, was a fire genasi. He was known for his passionate personality and fiery temperament, earning him the moniker "the Inferno of the Seas". As a genasi, he has lived longer than most humans. Stories told of his bravado. He grew overconfident and reckless in his final years, eventually dying during an attempted heist in the city of Vatalli.   Following the death of Malik Osman, the Trading Coalition hired a large force of Condotierri to invade Al-Badir. Many pirate captains fled across Durin, while the remaining few were disorganized and easily defeated by the Coalition force. The city of Al-Badir was a pirate's den, filled with stolen treasures, pleasure dens, and fighting pits, all partially ransacked by the fleeing captains. The city is now a colony of the Trading Coalition to prevent it from once again becoming a den of thieves and the Coalition rushes to set up a colonial government.

Demography and Population

Al-Badir was a diverse city, with pirates of many backgrounds calling it home before the Conquest of the Trading Coalition. Since the Conquest, the city has a significant occupying force of Trading Coalition citizens above the mostly Marru native population. Some diverse backgrounds remain from the pirate days.

Agriculture & Industry

The deserts of Al-Badir have few natural resources. Most wealth was brought in through piracy, and it is unclear what economy the colonization will bring. Some fishing occurs in the waters near Al-Badir, and the occasional farm borders the core city of Al-Badir.
