Aergeska
The gnomish island nation of Aergeska has a long and proud history. The strange island nation is largely comprised of gnomes, with a small population of other races. Despite being surrounded by the human and goliath centric continent of Dagadae, its history goes back further than most other nations on the continent. It is known for its advances in the magical arts and scholarly wizard upper-class.
Structure
Basilon: the ruler of the island nation and simultaneously the head of all the Agogai.
Basiloniki: heir to the Basilon
Council of Olignomas: council of senior gnome wizards from around the country that assist the king in making decisions, submitting legislation, and allocating funding for wizards.
Culture
The gnomes of Aergeska believe that scholarship and magic is the primary way to elevate oneself and the society around them. All pursuits of magic are permitted, but with some of the darker kind being heavily monitored and regulated. Excellence in magic shows a high intellect and the ability to master oneself, as a result, wealthy noble families strongly encourage their children to apply for the magical aptitude tests offered by the government. These test will measure young gnomes' magical ability and which temple discipline they have an affinity for.
Demography and Population
The vast majority of the population are gnomes born and raised on the island, and foreigners, while viewed as intellectually inferior, are not forbidden entry into the country. Those who wish to establish permanent residence must go through a lengthy process in order for the government to discern if the immigrant has any value to contribute to the society. Many craftsmanship jobs and labor jobs are filled by foreigners due to the overemphasis on scholarship in the natural born population.
Military
Aergeska does not have a large standing army, in fact, it has more of a defense force. However, its navy makes use of cutting edge sailing technology paired with powerful magical weapons to help them dominate the Byrion Sea. The nation has very little interest in any sort of expansion is fairly isolationist, this has led to the sustainment of a military large enough to defend sovereign land and waters, but little else.
Foreign Relations
Other nations are traded with and delegations are sent on occasion to foreign powers, but the country is more concerned with pushing magical research to heights than it is with foreign relations. It is on friendly terms with its neighbors due to the value of their magical product exports that are unique to Aergeska.
Education
Noble gnome children are educated until age 13 at which point they are tested for magical aptitude and then sent to either a temple for study or an apprenticeship for a trade. Education in the nation is primarily magic related and consists of various temples called Kanegnoroi. After a student is accepted into a Kanegnoroi they are instructed in one of the ten schools of magic. The standard education lasts for 7 years, at which point the students with the highest marks are given the opportunity to study under a senior Gerarai.
Students that are apprenticed under senior Gerarai are trained for another 5 years and then introduced to upper-class society in a Basidromia. Much is expected from students who receive tutelage from senior Gerarai and they are more likely to receive funding from the Council of Olignomas.
Children who are found to have little or no magical aptitude are sent to a craftsman to learn trades, join the military, or become low level bureaucrats.
