Razor Grass

Even though everyone calls this razor grass it is actually a cactus.

Basic Information

Anatomy

They look like giant blades of purple grass. The plant sides come to a fine razor edge with several spikes along the length. Giving it an almost serrated look to the edge. They will generally grow in small communities of 3 to 13 plants. Their sizes vary from about a large knife up to 20-foot monsters found in the Dark Lands.

Genetics and Reproduction

It has an unusual dual form of reproduction. The first and primary is for the roots to split from the primary plant and grow a new plant as long as it has the proper resources. Hence why you always find the plant in clumps. The second method is not so benign. If the plant senses a creature nearby, it can fire its spikes out like a bullet. If it does strike, each end is coated in a natural poison. This poison will not kill right away, giving a victim time to counteract the toxin. The true purpose of this is that the body goes far away from the existing cluster before it dies. The spike embedded in the body will rapidly grow roots into the body to keep it from being pulled out. Once the host dies, the plant will use the corpse as nutrition till its roots grow into the ground.

Growth Rate & Stages

These plants will grow on average about a foot a year. In some territories like the Dark Lands they truly thrive and will grow two to three feet in a year.

Ecology and Habitats

Any area with a fair amount of volcanic gas in the air. This means places like Dark Lands, The Fiery Isle, and all around the Rocking Sea.

Dietary Needs and Habits

This plant seems to thrive on volcanic gasses in the air. The more toxic the air is it is the more they seem to grow.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Despite the dangers of this plant, it has many uses. First and foremost, they are cacti and like all cacti, they hold water. Thanks to the plant's abilities, this water is clean and safe to drink even in the Dark Lands. Smaller blades of grass have been used for millennia as knives and swords. The spikes also make excellent arrowheads, and the poison is easily collected to be used for nefarious purposes. The outer shell of the plant is solid, durable, and lightweight. It also has a natural ability to protect from heat. For this reason, its shell is also a popular material to make armor and shields from.
