Rules Compatibility

Drintera is a setting for fantasy tabletop roleplaying games, not a game in itself. Our emphasis is on storytelling and lore that create a rich setting and inspire many different kinds of game play.

That said, Drintera is designed to be easy for game masters to adopt. We're building most of the familiar elements of Dungeons & Dragons and similar games into the world. For example, we assume there are character classes, and we further assume there is a distinction between arcane and divine spellcasters. This world has orcs and elves and dragons.

Rules Notes

Some, but not all, articles in the Drintera wiki include a "rules notes" (or "rules integration") section that explains how to apply rules from one or more game systems to the topic at hand. For example, in an article about a culture, rules notes may tell you what character background or skills to choose to represent a typical member of that culture.

5.5E: Black Flag Roleplaying

The Black Flag Roleplaying System Reference Document (SRD) is the primary game system we use for stat blocks and rules integration notes. It's so similar to Dungeons & Dragons 5.5e that most game masters won't notice the differences.

Several player character archetypes that were in the 2014 edition of the Dungeons & Dragons Player's Handbook aren't included in the Black Flag SRD, or any other open-licensed SRD at the time of this writing. Shewstone Publishing will leave it to others to publish rules in that level of detail. We recommend the following products from other publishers:

Shewstone Publishing and Drintera are not affiliated with the publishers of the products mentioned above. We've read them and we suggest they may be useful if you're running a 5E game.

Pathfinder Second Edition (Remastered)

For selected articles, we also provide integration notes for Pathfinder Second Edition (remastered). We may recommend Pathfinder stat blocks for you to use to represent a creature, but we don't have the budget to develop stat blocks in multiple systems. At this time, all our original stat blocks are for Black Flag Roleplaying.

Other Open-Licensed Systems

In the future, we hope to add notes on how to convert Drintera to other rules systems. These will likely take the form of a short guide for each system, rather than rules notes attached to multiple articles.

We only plan to publish rules notes for systems that are available under an open license such as the Open RPG Creative (ORC) license or the subset of Creative Commons licenses that allow commercial use. We no longer consider Wizards of the Coast's Open Game License (OGL) a viable open license.
