Idrigoro (ID-ree-goh-roh)

God of volcanoes, metalworking, and crafts

written by Jack Kellum

The Forgefire, God of Stone and Metal, Lord of Ash, He Who Renews

Idrigoro (he/him) is the god of volcanoes, and of the destruction that clears the way for new creation, just as his much elder brother Manani is the god of death that makes way for new life. He is a god of contradictions: He is known to be wrathful and destructive, but he is most worshipped as the god of smiths, masons, and craftsmen—a god of creation. At his core, he is the fire of creation itself, the bubbling magma from within the earth, and the twin brother of Viera, the Hearthfire. He is close friends with Rothar, the thunderer, and treasures the earthquakes Rothar makes that bring Idrigoro's lava to the surface.

He is patron of all who work in stone and metal, of firefighters, and of those who set fires to clear away underbrush to improve the health of a forest or field. He represents civilization just as much as his twin sister does, for his stone buildings and metal tools are crucial to agriculture and cities, and the ash from his volcanoes leaves the land more fertile.

Shapes and Messengers

He appears most often as a heavily muscled man, lanky and wiry, a paragon of strength with no concern for appearances. He is often hairy, but the hair is always singed. His black sooty hair is long, and he is often portrayed with a beard, even when he has taken the form of an ancestry or lineage that lacks them. His soot- and ash-stained skin is usually a fiery red, unless he is for some reason hiding his identity. He most often appears as a dwarf, fire giant, human, or orc, but he can be any species. Fairly often, Idrigoro is shown with one eye closed or missing, referring to the practice smiths have of closing one eye to guage the temperature of metal by its color.

As an animal, he favors the form of a large black dog with red ears and eyes ( or one eye), a loyal guardian and friend to mortals, but dangerous indeed if mistreated or uncontrolled, just a fire is. For a messenger, he often sends his own great dog, Narvi, the Black Shield. Sometimes he will send a black donkey, but only to those who have been acting foolish. He can also speak through any forge, cold or hot, and any volcano. Any black dog is considered sacred to him, and an essential aide to help keep him informed.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

Idrigoro's most common symbol is a simple triangle representing his volcanoes, sometimes with a stylized flame inside. He is sometimes also represented with an anvil or a smith's hammer.
