Rothar

God of Thunder, Earthquakes, and the Wild

by Jack Kellum

The Earthshaker, the Wrathful One, Patron of Heroes, the Lord of Storms, Lord of the Oak

Rothar (he/him) is god of thunder and earthquakes, wrath and ruin, but a patron of heroes and protector of mortals, especially common folk. Physically mightiest of the gods, he is worshiped by many warriors but is most assuredly not a war god. His elder brother is Velotaras , and their relationship is often contentious, with the Outsider God sending monsters to test heroes and whole nations, and Rothar aiding those heroes or nations against them, or in some cases simply fighting the monsters himself, as is often told of in the stories. The two share the same Earth titan as mother, though Rothar is much younger.

The stones that shake at Rothar's wrath and echo his thunder are sacred to him, as are the tall oaks so often struck by his lightning. Especially sacred are thunderstones, mixtures of stone and metal that have fallen from the sky, said to be the physical remains of his thunderbolts.

While Tephera is the creator of life and associated with the mud from which she sculpted living things, Rothar is just as much an Earth god, as is his brother: Rothar of the stone and of earthquakes, while Velotaras is god of the deep earth, of things delved from the ground, of roots and other buried things . His younger half-siblings are the twins Idrigoro and Viera, the god of volcanoes and the goddess of the hearth.

Rothar is also associated with wildness, wilderness, and freedom.
