Archetypes in DREAMPUNK | World Anvil

Archetypes

Archetypes in this setting represent the common characters that are the center of our stories. Your species gender, origin, and other details might be important as you write your character background, but they are not the defining feature. Feel free to vary your species     In stories, heroes usually fall into one of these types or caricatures. How you fit into these types (or subvert them) is up to you!

Designer Note

I chose to use general archetypes instead of species due to the design space of the setting. I wanted the focus to be on hwat kind of hero you are, not what species is the most powerful for your idea, concept, or build. This choice has been argued against and for by several others including both GM's and Players. I have settled on this as the final design space for my setting as I hold it as appriate.   I do plan on adding special additional options in the future as there are several species, I have in mind for players to use. Those species do not fall into the same concept, however as those in mind are NOT dreamers but instead have a special connection to magic and its potential through other means.

Author's Notes

My intent with using generic archetypes vs races is I wanted anyone to play anything that came to their mind. The are plenty of opportunities to play the standard human, elf, gnome, order, etc, but I wanted the chance to play even an animal, construct, or other things. I will be adding racial Tier 1 talents that can only be purchased at character creation for those who want their race to feel a bit more unique. I felt it was more important to have the general type of character as an archetype for the focus of the character creation. I am working on using templates and the like to insert the starting archetype profiles here, but it is just a learning process.
