History & Usage

Everyday use

Marshmallow is widely used by the common populace, chiefly as an ingredient in confectionary, chopped into salads, or fried and eaten as a vegetable. The water left behind after boiling marshmallow can serve as a substitute to egg whites. It is also grown and burnt as incense to invoke divine protection from the local nature spirits, giving marshmallow the status as a foundation upon which relationships between mortals and spirits are built.

Cultural Significance and Usage

Marshmallow is looked to as a plant of healing, though many communities that have an abundance of marshmallow take this even further; they consider marshmallow the voice of the local spirits, and look to it for omens that might help them understand the Numen better. Furthermore, marshmallow confectionary are often given as offerings to royalty and in rituals to the divine.

Industrial Use

As well as serving as an ingredient, marshmallow flowers can alternatively be used as a catalyst for brewing Numen-summoning concoctions, or used to empower Numen-conjuration magic.

Refinement

While the plant itself is used in a lot of ways, the alchemical properties of marshmallow come from its root, which must be separated from the rest of the plant, dried, and ideally stored for years, whereas the rest of the plant can be used raw or dried.
