Púgrams

The Púgrams1 are an amphibian people inhabiting the remote Púgam Island in southeastern Dragonía, far south of the Erenere Archipelago. They are among the most isolated people in the world, as they are native to the island and have neither explored nor had visitors from the outside world.

Appearance and abilities

Púgrams are short and stocky, with hunched posture and a thick, rather short tail to keep balance. The tail and lower back are adorned with a semitransparent crest. Their mouth is large and has a set of small, sharp teeth, and the eyes have cross-shaped pupils. Three digits are on each limb, with one acting as a thumb on each hand.
Although they're amphibians, Púgrams are adapted to life on land, and only their eggs and young children require being submerged in Guttúk Lake on the northern part of the island. They move rather sluggishly due to having poor stamina.
Each Púgram has unique markings on their skin in the form of irregular stripes and spots. Blue and purple hues are most common, with reddish skin being rare due to being tied to recessive genes.

Culture

Cuisine

Púgram diet consists of insects, worms and grubs, reptiles, fish, shellfish and occasional large sea creatures that wash up on the beach. Fishing in particular can be dangerous, for seawater is highly poisonous for Púgrams, and requires waiting on a stone pier of sorts with a spear or trident. Most púgrams prefer using simple fish traps instead.
Food is eaten raw, as the use of fire is unknown to them.

Religion

Púgrams believe that they share their island home with myriad spirits, which are simply treated as part of everyday life rather than worshipped. They have no stories about the beginning or end of the world, it has simply always existed as far as they're concerned.

Funerary practices

Púgrams practice neither burial nor cremation, instead the dead are pushed off promontories into the sea, where they are believed to be reincarnated as certain species of fish. Any such fish that's caught in traps is wrapped in palm leaves and left somewhere in the forest, so that it will reincarnate as a Púgram.
