Igni Patchfur

Igni Patchfur (a.k.a. Patches)

The Patchfur family is an offshoot clan of the Tinderhoof farming family. As the two families grew together, so did their harvests. Alongside each other, they proved to be the most capable farmers in all of Ruxan . Their produce yield was able to satisfy the needs of the region, as well as make the families a nice wad of extra money. For years each family grew on one side of the region, each: Patchfurs on the west side and Tinderhoofs on the east side. When Simeon Tinderhoof had his son Maru Tinderhoof in 3017, the Patchfur family was also blessed with their own bundle of joy a year later: Igni.    For the first few years of life, Igni lived a simple childhood. She grew up without worry on the farmstead, never fearing when their next meal would be. She had a close attachment to her father and would often follow him around the farm asking to help out. As she grew out of her baby and toddler phases she was allowed to help, and the constant following of daddy would be rewarded when he gave her her first bag of seeds to help him plant in the fields. It was a challenge for her to realize the importance of attending to crops, as well as knowing what different plants needed in terms of sunlight, water and soil. This was what caused her to love farming as much as she does.   The years flew by after she learned how to farm and harvest. By the age of seven Igni was already tending to fields on her own and overseeing the production of crops. She was turning into a little rancher very quickly. Around the time of her birthday the family took her to her first experience of the Family Harvest. Every year the two families would gather together in the farming town of Vicus to share stories, advice about farming and get updates on the families. This was Igni and Maru's first interaction together; they played together, something that Igni didn't get to do often as there were no other children on the Patchfur farm. Unfortunately, it would be their last interaction for a few years.   The Patchfur family began to fall on rougher times, as the harvest on their side of Ruxan began to dry up. It wasn't to the point that they became impoverished or couldn't feed themselves, but the relaxed lifestyle they had been living began to slip from their grasp. Over these harder years, Igni blossomed into an accomplished farmer of sorts, as the fields she managed always sprouted amazing yields of crops. But something was amiss with these abundant harvests. There was always something odd about them, sometimes the tomatoes would sprout flowers out of the side, or the squash would have faces on their sides. Even the flowers that were her personal field from the seeds her father gave her years earlier seemed to grow little arms on their sides. The crops were able to be used as food, but they couldn't sell them to market due to the oddities that afflicted them; they just wouldn't be able to sell. Regardless, it seemed that her "crazy crops" were saving the family and digging them out of the rut they were slipping into.     In 3030, at the age of 12, Igni began to manifest strange powers. Her seemingly normal actions such as raking fields, picking crops or planting seeds all began to suffer from "side effects". Sometimes the rake handle would freeze over with ice, other times it would combust in her hands. The seed she'd be planting would rupture with a loud bang. The "crazy crops" from years prior were actually predecessors to her powers as a Sorcerer manifesting. The raw magical energy inside of her had begun to leak out of her body in minute ways at first, but as she came into adolescence the heightened emotions she experienced unleashed all that stored power. That green thumb she had now began to fizzle out of control, as all the magic that was creating her amazing crops was now causing any mundane farming action to cause disaster. She burned fields, overheated the soils to the point of death and nearly uprooted the barn. The link of her powers was eventually established to be anything that brought her childhood-joy, such as her farming. Her father, regretfully, sent her off to explore her own abilities away from the farm, as well as forbade her from assisting in the farming.   She was sent off-farm to the hills and fields nearby, where she'd be able to attune to her powers and try to control them without jeopardizing the farm any further. She found some semblance of success for the first few months, but the entire Patchfur family was shocked when Simeon was killed in an accident during that same year. The family attended the funeral for him, though it was more of a memorial service due to him being cremated. Igni attempted to console Maru but was stopped by her dad. "Not now. Let him mourn," he told her, also worried that any emotional response that she may have would end up ruining the service as well. It would be the last time Igni would see Maru, and that the two families would see each other.   Shortly after Simeon's passing, the Aeternum Forest that had always bordered near the farm grew exponentially. There were always worries in Igni's mind about the forest overtaking the farm, but she had estimated it would take years before it would actually happen. That was not the case, as within months the forest swallowed the Patchfur farm and left no trace of their little farm ever being there.    Inside the forest the farm thrived more than it ever had outside the trees. The forest amplified the farms fields and provided generous amounts of crops, but also had the side-effect of helping marginalize Igni's outbursts. It seemed that something within the forest was helping manage her abilities, almost like it was sealing the flow of raw, unrestricted magical energy into her body. She was still capable of causing havoc on the farm, but only when the most intense emotional flareups occurred. While it seemed like a solution, whenever the time for harvesting began, the seal on Igni's powers would vanish and she would fall out of control again. Her father ended up having to send her away again for the harvests so that she wouldn't damage anything.    She used this time to finally adapt, meditate and attempt to understand her abilities. She found out the specifics of what she could do: The language of nature made itself clear to her, she could manipulate plant life with concentrated thought, and the surround soil or water could be freely formed into shapes with the flow of her fingers. She started developing spells that she would name herself, even if it was basic, already discovered magic. Even as she continued to understand her powers to better depths, it still was under no full control. Any attempts to cast her spells or freely use her abilities would always cause some form of fire-lighting, whether it was on the area she tried to affect or herself. This combined with her own natural clumsiness were factors in her father continuing to keep her away from the farm, at least during the times of harvest.   In the current year, she still has yet to manage complete control over her powers, but it has improved. She still gets sent away during harvest, which is conveniently around this time...
