The Rifting
"The Rifting"
Whether it was during The Sundering, after The Binding, or in between, is still not known for certain, but several small rips in the dimensional fabric of the planes occurred. These went unnoticed by all denizens of the planes for some time, but were eventually found. In the prime material plane, on Domen Aria, the rifts were discovered well after The Binding. It is commonly thought among scholars that the pushing and pulling of the Planet Shards finally tore small holes between the planes.
These rips or tears can allow a creature from one side of a plane to instantly travel through to the other plane, as long as they can fit through. Fortunately most of these rifts are small in size and so have a natural limit to what can come through. How long they were opened for and what exactly came through is anyone’s guess.
These rifts usually appear as vertical black tears in the air, of various size and width. Most rifts to the higher planes seem to have been closed quite quickly form the other side, while many rifts to the lower planes have been wedged open by their planar beings, with some malevolent agenda in mind no doubt. Apparently with some effort, the rips can be closed or repaired from either side with a little bit of knowledge, magic, or faith.
Although all rifts seem to be closed for now, it is often wondered if The Sundering and The Binding have weakened the boundaries between worlds, and that the rifts might one day reopen. Perhaps this may occur by the stretching and weakening of the planar fabric or through magical means, whether accidentally or even intentionally, the rifts may indeed return.
Some speculate that the boundary between planes is thinnest where there is matching elements or characteristics on either side of the planar fabric. If one ever sees a black crack in the air, or a void of nothingness where there should be somethingness, then perhaps the rifting has returned.
