The Ples Mora Sea

"The Ples Mora doesn’t forgive, it tests. Survive its waters, and you’ve earned the right to boast. Fail, and you’ll feed its depths."
— Captain Korlan Thornbeach, a seasoned sailor known for narrowly escaping the sea’s infamous Fastwater Currents.
The Ples Mora Sea is a place where beauty and danger entwine beneath sunlit waves and moonlit shadows. Nestled east of the ominous Nation of Veladare and just south of the vast Daria Ocean, its warm waters host a vibrant yet perilous ecosystem. Coral reefs near the shores teem with life, their colors masking lurking predators, while the deeper Blue Abyss harbors whispers of ancient ruins and serpentine guardians.   Sailors tell haunting tales of the Wailing Winds, ghostly cries carried over the waves on moonless nights, and the Fastwater Currents, unseen forces capable of dragging the strongest ships to ruin. Treacherous waterspouts and eruptions of boiling Scald Bursts make the sea unpredictable, while venomous fish and elusive sea monsters ensure no journey goes without risk.   Legends speak of a civilization lost to the depths, its relics coveted by treasure hunters, yet guarded by mysteries too great for most to face. The Ples Mora Sea is more than a passage or a source of livelihood, it is a test of courage, a realm of myth, and a watery grave for the unprepared. Those who dare to traverse it must respect its power, for here, the sea's embrace is as likely to kill as it is to awe.

Geography

The Ples Mora Sea lies in a tropical region, bordered to the west by the Nation of Veladare and the Ko Mora Sea, and to the north by the vast Daria Ocean. Its geography features warm, choppy waters with strong currents and unpredictable tides. The coastal regions are dotted with vibrant coral reefs, forming underwater labyrinths teeming with life. In contrast, the deeper zones, known as the Blue Abyss descend into shadowy depths filled with steep undersea cliffs. Small, scattered islands rise from its waters, many cloaked in jungle vegetation, while the open sea is notorious for sudden waterspouts and treacherous whirlpools. The sea’s geography is as dangerous as it is beautiful, offering a mixture of opportunity and peril for sailors and explorers alike.

Ecosystem

The Ples Mora Sea boasts a rich and diverse ecosystem, thriving in its warm tropical waters. Along the coastline and among its coral reefs, colorful fish, crustaceans, and bioluminescent algae create vibrant underwater worlds. Predator species such as Razor Barracuda, Fang Eels and venomous sea serpents prowl these reefs, while larger creatures like Leviathan Turtles and sleek Skyfin Striker Sharks dominate open waters.   In the deeper Blue Abyss, the ecosystem takes on a more mysterious and sinister tone. Blind fish with glowing lures, massive serpent-like predators, and swarms of venomous jellyfish thrive in the darkness. The sea's top predators, the fabled serpentine sea monsters, are said to guard the ruins of a lost civilization, keeping the ecosystem in a delicate and dangerous balance.

Localized Phenomena

The Ples Mora Sea is known for its treacherous localized phenomena. The Wailing Winds carry eerie, mournful sounds across the sea on moonless nights, unnerving sailors who attribute them to drowned spirits or unseen sea creatures. The Fastwater Currents are invisible, powerful underwater streams that can drag ships off course or trap them in whirlpools. The Scald Bursts are patches of water that suddenly emit bursts of heat and light, scalding nearby creatures and boiling small areas of water. Lastly, the Echoing Depths produce strange, resonant sounds like tolling bells or rhythmic chanting from the Blue Abyss, disorienting and unsettling those who hear them. These phenomena are natural enigmas that make the sea as dangerous as it is fascinating.

Climate

The Ples Mora Sea experiences a warm, tropical climate characterized by high humidity and consistent temperatures year round. Gentle sea breezes often sweep across its waters, but the region is prone to sudden, intense storms, especially during the monsoon season. These storms bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, and turbulent seas. Moonless nights are eerily calm, amplifying the mysterious Wailing Winds heard by sailors. Despite its warmth, the deeper waters of the Blue Abyss remain cold and shadowy, creating a stark contrast to the sunlit coral reefs along the coast. Frequent waterspouts and unpredictable shifts in weather make the Ples Mora Sea as treacherous as it is vibrant.

Natural Resources

The Ples Mora Sea is abundant in natural resources, both mundane and exotic. Its coral reefs provide a wealth of fish and crustaceans, many of which are highly sought after for their meat, bioluminescence, and alchemical properties. Venomous species in the sea yield rare toxins used in potions, poisons, and medicine.   The coastal reefs are also a source of vibrant, durable coral, prized for crafting jewelry and magical artifacts. Pearls of unusual size and color, known as Moonpearls, are harvested from Moon Oysters in the sea's depths and rumored to carry mystical properties. In the Blue Abyss, ancient ruins reportedly hide precious metals and enchanted relics, though the dangers of the depths deter all but the most daring. Additionally, the sea’s waters are rich with deposits of rare, shimmering Waveglass crystals, found along undersea cliffs, used by enchanters to focus and amplify magic.

History

The history of the Ples Mora Sea is steeped in mystery and legends. Ancient texts speak of a once-thriving civilization that flourished along its shores and beneath its waters, mastering both magic and engineering. This civilization supposedly sank into the depths of the Blue Abyss after a cataclysmic event, leaving behind ruins and relics now lost to time.   The sea has long been a contested region for trade and naval power, with many nations vying for control of its abundant resources and strategic location. Pirate fleets and rogue captains have haunted its waves for centuries, exploiting the treacherous waters and its supernatural phenomena to evade capture. Local folklore tells of great naval battles, cursed fleets, and the wrath of the sea itself, which some claim punishes those who disrespect its power.   More recently, the Ples Mora Sea remains a feared and respected region, known as much for its economic opportunities as for the dangers lurking in its depths. Sailors continue to weave tales of both fortune and ruin, ensuring its place as one of Domen Aria’s most enigmatic and perilous waters.

Tourism

Tourism in the Ples Mora Sea is rare due to its dangerous reputation, but thrill-seekers, treasure hunters, and adventurers are drawn to its mysteries. The coastal coral reefs, known for their vibrant colors and exotic marine life, attract skilled divers and scholars studying rare species. Some brave sailors offer guided voyages to the edges of the Blue Abyss, where stories of ancient ruins entice treasure seekers despite the peril.   The more accessible shores host small, isolated fishing villages that provide modest hospitality to visitors. Local festivals celebrating the sea’s bounties, such as the Festival of the Wailing Winds, lure curious travelers, though superstitions often warn against venturing far from shore. For most, the Ples Mora Sea remains a place of fascination best observed from a safe distance, leaving only the boldest or most reckless to explore its secrets.

"The sea has no mercy, no memory, and no loyalty. Its only truth is that it belongs to itself, not to those who cross it."
— Delandor Faelind, a philosopher writing on the dangers of nature.
