— Vorina Rukot, foremost expert on ancient and magical artifacts
The Eye Of Morkoth is a powerful artifact of dark design. Supposedly it is named for the zealot beholder cult leader, Morkoth. Although it seems that most of its history has been deliberately erased from the record, speculation suggests that the rumored Cult Of Koth is it’s most probable creator, despite there being no evidence that the cult ever existed. This eyes shaped amulet is said to have been made from the actual beholder that the cult worshipped, providing both incredible abilities and powerful side effects. With these great abilities, many influential organizations and individuals have sought out the Eye throughout history.

Description

The Beholder's Eye: At the heart of the pendant is the preserved eye of a Beholder, suspended within a delicate lattice of arcane silver filigree. The eye is remarkably well-preserved, with the iris shimmering in various shades of malevolent purples, blues, and deep blacks. It bears the iconic central eye surrounded by smaller eyes on stalks, creating an unsettling, almost hypnotic effect.   Arcane Silver Chain: The Beholder's eye is encased in a meticulously crafted, enchanted setting of arcane silver. The chain that suspends the pendant is a work of art in itself, composed of interlocking links that seem to shift between shadowy hues and ethereal glows. The silver appears to have a slight iridescence, reacting to the ambient magical energies that permeate the artifact.   Enigmatic Glyphs and Runes: The arcane silver setting is adorned with intricate glyphs and runes that wind their way around the chain and frame of the pendant. These mysterious symbols seem to pulse with latent magical energy, suggesting the presence of powerful enchantments woven into the very fabric of The Eye of Morkoth. Scholars and arcanists find themselves captivated by the challenge of deciphering their meaning.   Malevolent Aura: A subtle, malevolent aura emanates from the pendant, casting an almost imperceptible shadow in its immediate vicinity. Those sensitive to magical energies can feel the dark currents that surround The Eye of Morkoth, giving it an air of foreboding that both repels and entices.   Lifelike Detail: The craftsmanship of the arcane silver setting is nothing short of extraordinary. Each minute detail of the Beholder's eye is preserved with lifelike accuracy, capturing the grotesque beauty of the creature's ocular anatomy. The eye seems to follow observers with an unnerving gaze, creating an illusion of sentience.   Cursed Whispers: From the pendant, faint whispers of cursed knowledge emanate sporadically. These whispers are not always audible, but when they manifest, they carry the weight of forgotten secrets and ancient truths. Those attuned to the arcane can sense the resonance of these whispers, adding an enigmatic layer to the pendant's allure.   Malevolent Gaze: When activated, The Eye of Morkoth can exhibit a malevolent gaze akin to that of a Beholder. The central eye, surrounded by smaller eye motifs on the pendant, glows with an eerie light. This feature not only enhances its mystique but also serves as a visual representation of the potent powers hidden within.   Beholder's Essence: Faint traces of magical essence radiate from the Beholder's eye, hinting at the otherworldly power bound within The Eye of Morkoth. The Beholder's essence seems to shift and ripple within the eye, as if the creature's consciousness is forever trapped within the confines of the artifact.
"The whispers of The Eye are a symphony of forbidden knowledge. I, too, sought its truths, only to be ensnared by the echoes of a Beholder's mind. There is power, but at what cost? Madness dances in the shadows it reveals."
— Drennus Kors, Cursed Mage from the College of Esoteric Arcana

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The mechanics and inner workings of The Eye of Morkoth involve a combination of arcane enchantments and the residual essence of the Beholder from which it originates. While the exact details have been lost to the ravages of time, many arcane researchers including both the White Wands and Vorina Rukot believe that the following aspects must be true.   Beholder's Essence: The Eye of Morkoth retains a trace of the Beholder's essence, granting it the unique abilities associated with Beholders. This essence is carefully preserved and magically bound within the eye, providing the source of its power.   Arcane Silver Chain: The high-quality, Arcane Silver chain serves multiple purposes. It not only functions as a means of wearing the pendant but also acts as a conduit for the magical energies contained within the eye. The arcane silver may enhance the artifact's connection to magical forces.   Mind's Echo: The ability to delve into the thoughts and memories of a target involves a telepathic connection facilitated by the Beholder's essence. The Eye of Morkoth taps into the latent psionic abilities of the Beholder to reveal hidden truths.   Lifedrain Beam: The Lifedrain Beam is an extension of the Beholder's innate eye rays. The eye channels dark energy, akin to the Beholder's negative energy ray, allowing the wielder to siphon the life force of a target. The arcane silver chain aids in focusing and directing this beam.   Vision Beyond Veils: The Eye's power to see through illusions and magical concealments is a result of the Beholder's anti-magic eye abilities. The essence of the Beholder imbues the Eye with the ability to pierce through magical deceptions, revealing the true nature of the world.   Malevolent Aura: The malevolent aura surrounding the Eye is a manifestation of the residual malevolence of the Beholder. It creates an unsettling atmosphere, enhancing the artifact's intimidating presence.   Cursed Whispers: The whispers emitted by the pendant are echoes of the Beholder's memories and experiences. These cursed whispers are tied to the psionic residue within the eye, occasionally surfacing as cryptic utterances.

Manufacturing process

Very little is known about this ancient artifact and even less is known about how it was made. While several individuals and organizations are rumored to have been involved in its creation and ownership, there is no definitive proof as to who or what created this artifact, or how they did so.

Theorized Creators

The creation of The Eye of Morkoth is often attributed to secretive and shadowy organizations with a deep understanding of arcane arts, forbidden knowledge, and a fascination with Beholders. A few organizations that are rumored to be associated with the manufacture of this artifact are:   The Black Shadow Conclave: A clandestine group of shadow mages and dark magic practitioners, The Black Shadow Conclave operates in the shadows, pursuing forbidden knowledge and the manipulation of shadows. Whispers suggest that they sought to create The Eye of Morkoth as a conduit for their shadowy arts.  Evidence suggests that Malakars Shadowspinner used the Eye to successfully raid and ultimately destroy the Temple Of The Web  The Avgrunn Cabal: An organization with ties to the Abyss, The Avgrunn Cabal is rumored to consist of warlocks, abyssal sorcerers, and those who delve into forbidden dimensions. They are believed to have sought the chaotic power of Beholders, leading to the creation of The Eye of Morkoth.   The Gazing Spheres: A cult dedicated to Beholder worship and the exploration of the creatures' mysterious abilities. The Gazing Spheres are believed to have played a key role in crafting The Eye of Morkoth. Their arcane rituals and dark pacts may have bound the essence of a Beholder to the artifact.   The Lelet Artificers: A guild of master enchanters and artificers, The Lelet Artificers are known for their pursuit of magical mastery. Rumors suggest that a faction within the artificers, seeking to push the boundaries of magical creation, came together to craft The Eye of Morkoth.   The Cult Of The Living Shadow: A cult dedicated to the worship of shadows as eternal entities, The Cult of the Living Shadow is believed to have performed dark rituals to create The Eye of Morkoth. Their members are said to be drawn to artifacts that embody the essence of darkness.   The Valaisin Illuminators: A group of celestial scholars and mystics, The Valaisin Illuminators are associated with uncovering hidden truths and mysteries. Legends suggest that a faction within this organization sought to bridge the gap between light and shadow, leading to the creation of The Eye of Morkoth.   The Cult Of Koth: A cult of devoted Beholder worshipers, seeking to immortalize the essence of their revered Beholder deity, may have orchestrated the creation of the pendant. Although there is no definitive proof at this time, this cult seems to be the most likely candidate for the creation of the Eye Of Morkoth.

History

The history for the Eye of Morkoth seems to have been intentionally shrouded in secrecy with very little being available for study. Most of the Eyes information comes from word of mouth and careful whispers that have been passed down through the generations. Often it is only its rare public use, disasters, and attainment and loss that are recorded by history. What little is known is that its first appearance occurred over 5,700 years ago and it has periodically been lost and found throughout the ages up until the present. Currently it rests in one the strange museums controlled by the Sonians in the city of Memoria.
"They say The Eye can unveil hidden realms, but beware, for it opens doorways to places unseen. I once glimpsed a forest of eternal night, where stars whispered secrets, and shadows danced beneath the boughs. The Eye is both key and sentinel to such realms."
— Carrum Gailwind, Elven Ranger of the Whispering Glade

Abilities Of The Eye Of Morkoth:

Mind's Echo: The bearer can focus the Eye upon a target, delving into the thoughts and memories of the individual. It unveils hidden secrets and provides insights into the target's past, present, and intentions.   Lifedrain Beam: With a deliberate gaze, the Eye can unleash a beam of dark energy that drains the life force from the target, replenishing the bearer's vitality. The beam manifests as an eerie, shadowy projection.   Vision Beyond Veils: The Eye bestows upon the bearer the ability to see through illusions, invisibility, and magical concealments. It reveals the true nature of the world by piercing through magical deceptions.   Additional Features:   Malevolent Aura: The Eye exudes a subtle but palpable aura of malevolence, creating an unsettling feeling in those who come into its presence. It is as if the beholder's essence still lingers within the eye, casting a shadow over the artifact.   Chained Enigma: The arcane silver chain that holds the Eye is not just a means of wearing the pendant; it also serves as a conduit for the magical energies contained within. The chain shimmers with faint, arcane runes, highlighting its connection to the otherworldly power of the Beholder's eye.     Cursed Whispers: When worn, the pendant occasionally emits faint, echoing whispers that seem to originate from the Beholder's memories. These whispers are often indecipherable but hint at the ancient and enigmatic nature of the creature whose eye now adorns the necklace.

Negative Consequences And Conditions Associated With The Eye Of Morkoth:

Psionic Bond: The Eye establishes a subtle psionic bond with its owner. While this bond grants the wielder the ability to use the artifact's powers, it also exposes them to the echoes of the Beholder's thoughts and memories. Unwanted insights and haunting visions may intrude upon the wielder's consciousness.   Malevolent Influence: The malevolent aura surrounding The Eye has a lingering influence on its owner. Prolonged exposure may lead to heightened paranoia, tendencies toward secrecy, and occasional fits of aggression. The malevolence of the Beholder's essence can subtly reshape the owner's psyche.   Whispers of the Abyss: The cursed whispers emitted by the pendant occasionally become more pronounced. The owner may find themselves tormented by cryptic messages or unsettling visions. The intensity of these whispers increases during moments of stress or when using the artifact's powers extensively.   Planar Anchor Points: The Eye establishes an anchor point with other planes and dimensions. While this connection enhances its ability to pierce illusions, it also attracts the attention of malevolent entities from those various Planar Realms. The owner may find themselves pursued by shadows or otherworldly creatures seeking to exploit the anchor point as a means of influence or possible travel.   Cursed Vision: The Eye of Morkoth, when worn, alters the wearer's perception of reality. In moments of heightened emotion or danger, the owner may briefly experience distorted visions, making it challenging to distinguish friend from foe or reality from illusion.   Lifedrain Consequence: Using the Lifedrain Beam excessively can have a toll on the owner's vitality. While it replenishes the wielder's life force, there is a risk of becoming addicted to the power. Overindulgence may lead to physical and mental deterioration, with the user aging prematurely.   Temporal Instability: The Vision Beyond Veils ability, which allows the owner to see through magical concealments, occasionally causes temporal instability. The wielder may catch glimpses of alternate realities or potential futures, leading to moments of disorientation and confusion.   Beholder's Gaze: The Eye occasionally exhibits a gaze reminiscent of a Beholder's eye. While it grants the owner increased awareness, prolonged use may attract the attention of other Beholders or creatures sensitive to the iconic gaze. The wielder becomes a potential target for these entities.
"Aye, The Eye of Morkoth be a marvel of craft and magic, but a dangerous one at that. Its lifedrain could sustain a warrior through countless battles, yet I've seen the toll it takes. Beware the thirst for power, for it ages the stoutest heart."
